maiden launch - dead-stick landing - dead motor!

I purchased my A-4 from EPYAYA with the new red (version 2) motor.
I built with a large ESC and flew with good battery (4400 mah 3S)

Right in the middle of my first flight, the motor froze up!!!!

I was flying at 3/4 throttle at the time. About 3 mins into the flight.

Thankfully, GWS made a good airframe, and I was able to dead-stick it in for a safe landing. (okay, maybe I am a pretty good pilot too )

The motor with the kit came with no heat-sink, and none was shown in the instructions.

Was I supposed to put a heat-sink on the motor? Is this my fault?

Any suggestions for the motor replacement?

I did some searching online and can't find the GWS RED motor anywhere for a replacement. I would like to continue using the GWS fan.

So, can anyone recommend a drop-in replacement for the motor with 3mm shaft? I'm using 3S batteries.

I would really like to stay under $75.00 if possible.

thanks

Congrats on the recovery! The airfame is a winner - the motor and fan - well, it's a crap shoot. I've not had any issues with mine BUT I seem to be in the minority . Don't know of drop in replacement BUT if you check the foamy EDF forums, you will find something there.

Everything you have ever wanted to see or do to a GWS A-4 is probably covered in this thread. They are not GWS approved so they are not covered in tis thread . There is even a 2Kw setup that is currently in my Scooter, But again not GWS approved.

Hi John,

Sorry to know the problem you met. Using a heat sink on the motor could be better. My colleagues in GWS Taiwan applied 2200mAh 3S 25C Lipo with the same motor. Probably this motor drew far more Amps from this 4400 mAh 3S Lipo then got burnt.

Would you visit www.caliberhobby.com for the motor, GWBLM009A, or contact service@gwsus.com of GWS USA seeking help.

Heat Sink for 2815 ?

GWS very quickly replaced my seized 2815 motor through Caliber hobbies. I was very impressed with the speed of the replacement process!

Now, I need to purchase a heat sink in hopes of reducing the probability of a repeat performance.

The only place I see the 28mm heat sink is at caliber hobbies, but I really hate to pay $9.00 shipping on a $3.00 part.

Can anyone suggest somewhere where I might find this part (or similar) and avoid the high total cost?

Also, do I need to add any sort of grease to ensure good heat transfer?

thanks,

JohnAsa

I have an A4. that with an EDF 75 / 4, gives 15V, 32A, 36,200 rpm. (Motor ARC 28-47-1.5-2800kv.)

That push will have?
I feel it is too little. 600gramos around.
Very poor to 490watts.

600g thrust will be enough. My A4 is running on 3S with an ARC 28-37-2 producing 625g static thrust (at 30,500rpm), and it has good performance.

However, I think at least one of your measurements must be wrong. According to my calculations, at 36,200rpm the EDF75x4 should produce about 850g in the GWS A4.

Thank you very much Bruce.

I have not measured the thrust. only the RPM.
850gramos then with the A4 should fly well.

I need to try more motor design to let EDF75 pump out more thrust!

GWS EDF50 can give up to 910g thrust!

If we put a right motor, I am sure EDF75 can get 1000+g easy like pc of cake!
