Proboat Blackjack and Impulse 9's

I am trying to get more runtime on these 2 boats. I have seen alot about going to LiPos. My question is that since the ESC doesnt have a low voltage cutoff, how do you know when the voltage is down to the point of damaging the battery? I know i can buy a low Voltage Cutoff board cheap, but they arent waterproof and will fry easily if they get wet. Any ideas about Nimh batteries that will fit and give me more runtime?
