weave of fabric on pt-19

hi, just covering a dynaflite pt-19 with dress lining, was wondering if the fabric weave should show or should it be smooth on this plane. thanks

I've never seen a PT-19 up close. But, I would hazard a guess the fabric weave would be visible. That vintage of airframe and the type of usage suggest that to me. I doubt the Military would spend extra money for a glass smooth plane that is used for training purposes.

Hopefully someone will be along that knows this for a fact.

thanks ken, this is just a sport scale plane, but i would still like the right looking finish on it. gona paint it with semi-gloss silver paint. the army had a few that were silver in color, and you dont see these colors at the flying field every day like you do the blue and yellow. would like it to stand out from the others a little. lol

I was able to get up close and personal with a PT19 some years back. The wing is covered with playwood and had a smooth finish.

It had been upgraded to a certian extent. the landing struts were cromed and wheel covers were fitted (can't remember what those things are called) and it was painted maroon overall. It was still in and out of the airfield as late as 1960. It may have been refurbished but I'm inclined to believe it was AAF surpplus and simply repainted to hide the the original colors. Ed

I'm a career 30 plus year professional pilot with time in many different aircraft. I don't recall any fabric covered aircraft having very visable fabric weave. The multiple coats of dope to fill and shrink the fabric tend to make it pretty smooth. If I am not mistaken, the pt-19 had a lot of plywood covered areas that were then covered in fabric with a dope finish. It would have looked smooth. It would not necessarily have a high gloss waxed finish like a restored warbird, but it would have had the weave filled smooth.
