Lithium

After reading enough disclaimers and horror stories I decided to work out a safe box for storage and charging of my Lithiums. An old sheet metal lunchbox gets a new lease on life.

Sqrt,

Very handy. You may also want to consider another receptacle for "suspect" packs, ie. after a crash, short etc. That way, if the pack ignites, it will be isolated from your other packs and charger. I use a welding blanket.

If I put a piece of a welding blanket in the part where the thermos should go, do you think I would be safe?

Are you not worried about throwing out your charger along with a burned up/exploded battery...if it would happen? Maybe the melted gooey mess that was once (flame retardant?) foam will save it. I know that metal springy thing would love to unite your pos and neg leads.
I haven't experienced it but have read many horror stories about things going wrong and learned a few things in the process.
1/ Keep the batteries away from flameables
2/ No metal around that can short male charging jacks
3/ Fully contain a small explosive in light container = larger explosive with possible shrapnel.
4/ Unless your making scrambled eggs...dont keep all your eggs in one basket.

I guaged this around the idea that I would rather lose some batteries and a charger than my truck or house.
Good point about the male charge leads. I will have to make hoods for them to prevent such a mishap.
I don't think the explosive power of these batteries is enough to make the box into shrapnel. They seem to throw a flame rather than explode like a powder charge.

Somewhere between p-a-r-a-n-o-i-a and i-r-r-e-s-p-o-n-s-i-b-i-l-i-t-y lies prudent caution by reasonable people. We should not confuse one with the other.

Not without your help. But now I can.

Call me paranoid but I now charge in a steel box too. The box sits on 1/4" thuch ceramic tiles, so the hot box dosen't ignite the wooden bench top.

I'm not planning on making a mistake but would rather not loose my home if I do.

I kinda laugh when I hear someone call me paranoid cuz I've done some real, real crazy dangerous stuff for thrills. Take note of the video lipo fire by DNA. This is pretty mello comparitive to a short or damaged pack since it was done under a controlled period of overcharging for about an hour. Multiply that by whatever number of packs you keep together. I have seen what happens when a pack gets backed over by a car... very eye opening experience. As for the shrapnel point, it would be very very unlikely... but not impossible. The last shuttle came down the way it did because there were more people (engineers)convinced that a lousy peice of foam couldnt possibly have serious consequences than the few who did. Those firecrakers that can blow your fingers apart contain a charge similar to a couple match heads. A more likely scenario with a closed container is the entire force of the fire/explosion forcing its way out through cracks and less than perfect seals, simulating a jet exhaust.

Somewhere beyond paranoia and irresponsibility is a person with rose colored glasses that thinks "Nawww, that couldn't happen to me"
