E-Hawk 1500 from Thunder Tiger

E Hawk1500 building thread
There is a new bird on the model market, when I saw it I had to get one. It is well made, has a great shape, and is very car boot friendly.
I am in the process of putting it together with a few alterations, to make this great design even more versatile.

One can only hope that the manufacturer has a look at this, because in my opinion it does not extend the building process and would even save some hardware.

This model is aimed for the medium to advanced modeler, and once it is complete and flying hopefully proves my point.

Functions are : rudder, elevator,ailerons and motor.
The additional function I will add is spoilers by using an extra servo for ailerons.

I have started on it today and will add pictures as I get along with me completing the build.
So here is the first lot.

Content of the box includes all harware, even a brushless motor.
What impessed me even more the model retails for $180.

First thing I started with, was to fit the motor in its place, so I could test the prop and spinner supplied with the kit.
Although the spinner is made from plastic and held on by 2 grub screws, it holds on surprisingly well. I donít know how that would be using a more powerful motor. But for this motor it is sufficient.
I have tested the motor and was quite happy with its performance. Looking at the figures, I would imagine that it should have a more than a adequate climb rate, since it claims on the box to be 600g all up.

When installing the motor particular care has to be taken that it clears its surrounding. In my case I had to dremel a bit of the fuselage away to clear the top of the motor.

I got mine through Addies Hobbies in Carrum, and he of course got it from Kellets.

My next step was the canopy. I donít like the idea suggested in the manual, to drill a couple of holes on both sides to attach the canopy with screws, or use tape. This is not very convenient on the flying field , when trying to change the battery.
So I drilled a hole of 1.2mm just above the motor and glued a steel pin in a piece of scrap wood with the same diameter. Then I inserted the pin with the wood attached into the hole. Since the wood had to become part of the canopy it had to be shaped to follow the canopy recess. All it needed now was a drop of medium thick cyno on that piece of shaped wood while the pin was inserted in the hole, and the canopy put in place.
To make sure the cyno goes of fast before it has got time to get into places I donít want, I just sprayed some accelerator on the canopy on the inside.
Next step was to install a magnet in the fuselage at the back of the canopy rest. I drilled with the smallest drill bit I got a row of holes to create a square hole, just big enough to fit the magnet in the hole. A piece of tape was used to hold the magnet flush with the surface of the fuzz. At the same time it sealed the little gap around the magnet, so when I was turning the fuselage upside down and filled lots of cyno around the magnet from the inside of the body, the outside stayed nice and clean.
After the cyno was dry I set a second magnet on top of the first one. Now I used the same procedure as at the front of the canopy. A drop of thick cyno on the magnet and some accelerator on the back part of the canopy.
Slipped the front pin of the canopy in hole at the front and the back on top of the wet magnet. Once the glue was dry I took the canopy off and made a fillet of 5 min epoxy around the magnet and at the front from one side onto the scrap wood with the pin, see picture.
And now it is time to go in the shed to do some more.
