Another Ugly Stik

Here's my rendition of the Das Ugly Stik. The build was kind of informal; I didn't draw up any plans, just took an old 3-view and scaled it to the 48" span I wanted. Wings are white beaded foam (used a home-made hot wire foam cutter) with some carbon fiber spars and covered with Silkspan. Fuselage and tail surfaces were sheet balsa. Paint is Krylon H20 (water-based latex). Maltese crosses were cut from Monocote scraps. Power is an AXI 2814/10 with 9 x 6 prop and a 3-cell TP 2100 ma-hr pack. Here are the specs: 48 in span, area about 460 sq, weight 39 oz, wing loading approx 12.6 oz/sq ft, pwr loading approx 125 Watt/pound. The TP lipos were a little disappointing, giving me a peak of about 300 watts when I was hoping for 350 or so. Still, it performs fine. Maiden flight a few days ago showed nice takeoff acceleration, great climb and nice acro. It handles great and the landings are so sweet, they make me look good. Got about 6 or 7 flights on the little beastie and liking it! I hope this was the right forum, didn't know whether to post it on foamies, sport planes, acro or something else.

I love the stik, it's a great Sport Plane. My very first balsa plane was the E-flite electric version. Your's looks great, you should have lots of fun with it. Happy landings!

Thanks guys, no more build pics though. I may have been hasty in my judgment of the TP lipos. They were a little old and had been run hard in other models. Tried an Xcite 2200 pack this morning and the power is up to about 340 watts.

Brokenspar,

I'm curious about what airfoil you used? Was it just like the original or something else? I'm seriously planning on building an Ugly stick next winter and I'm working on plans now.

Thanks,
Jake

Airfoil very close to the original. Also, photos don't show it but the wing has a slight taper.
