KISS ESC 18a & 12a 2-4s
Iīm proud to present our new multicopter high preformance/low cost small size ESC the KISS ESC's (Keep It Super Simple)
There are two versions v1.0 at the same size (12x23mm)
The KISS ESC 12A 2-4S v1.0 [discontinued]
Available at flyduino.net http://flyduino.net/KISS-ESC-2-4S-12A_1
And the KISS ESC 18A 2-4S v1.0 [discontinued]
3D version of the KISS ESC 12A and KISS ESC 18A available at Flyduino
Downlad: Official Manual for the KISS 12/18A ESCS
KISS ESC 18A v1.1 with bigger solder pads (overall size 12x24mm) available at Flyduino now
New mini power distribution board for the KISSes by Flyduino
Fits 250 size quads very well:
Where else to buy
In Europe: Viacopter (worldwide shipping, 25% tax off for non-EU customers)
In the US: GetFPV, BuddyRC and BuildRCDrones
In Canada: Lift RC
Features: (except for the max continuous current and the price, both versions are almost identical)
- Made in the EU
- All N-fet
- Active freewheeling (no partload problems) (complementary PWM)
- regenerative/active braking (because of the complementary PWM the ESC brakes the motor activ if the throttle signal goes lower)
- fast gate drivers (high efficiency because of very low switching losses)
- adaptive deadtime (no through shots but also minimum possible body/freewheel diode use -> less losses)
- low RDSon fets -> 3,5mOhm on the 12A and 1,66mOhm typical on the 18A version
- 32kHz output PWM frequency (not audible)
- hardware in and output PWM (zero signal jitter)
- 10-bit PWM resolution (~950 usable steps)
- programmable throttle signal range
- normal PWM input (1000-2000us 25-500Hz) and oneshot125 PWM(125-250us -> for use with up to 1kHz) selectable with a solder jumper
- selectable rotation direction with a solder jumper
- fast throttel response (no ramp used)
- capable of up to 300.000 eRpm (up to 270.000 recommended)
- there is no external capacitor needed. (you may add one if you use long power wires or if you need a smoother voltage)
Because of the high possible eRpm it drives motors like the 1806 2300kv, 2206 2000kv or 2206 2350kv on 4S without problems
KISS 12 & 18A ESCs are selectable in eCalc now:
As a general advice: cheap motors should be handled with care!
Driving them at the limit might stress the magnets and the glue until they come lose and not only destroy the entire motor but also take the ESC with it - intense heat and fire will be the result.
Also some high kV motors in combination with 6" props and 4s lipos might be over the limit. If in doubt, use eCalc.

For those who are interested in using the One Shot feature
You will need to download a specific firmware for your FC.
For NanoWii you can download the firmware and GUI from here:
For Naze32 and OP CC3D thereīs "Cleanflight" code with One Shot support.
Use the thread search to find out more on the discussion about OneShot:
For flight demonstrations see the 2 OneShot videos by Birds of Prey and FinalGlide below.
To all OneShot sceptics
Peabody from Taulabs conducted several quantitative tests comparing the KISS ESC OneShot against standard PWM here:
"Using OneShot mode on this quad results in about a 20% reduction in ESC latency. Even before OneShot, these KISS ESCs were pretty damn fast so it already flew really well. I'm not sure I'll be able to tell the difference in rate mode, but I do believe a better acro pilot than me could."
How to prepare and solder the KISS ESCs:
NOTE: itīs recommended to solder both the Signal and GND wire between FC and ESC.
Especially if your motors seem to have sync problems!
How to solder with moderate tools:
The KISSes are tiny and delicate pieces of hardware. So please be careful when soldering them!
Inspect the ESCs thoroughly before and after you solder them - best with a magnifying glass.
Remains of solder can cause weird behaviour up to a damage! Read more here and here.
Hereīs a test of the max continuous rating:
- 16V (4S)
- MT-4008 770KV motor
- 12x4 tiger CF propeller
- part load (~80% throttle on the KISS 18A and ~50-80% on the KISS 12A)
- ESC in moving air, but not in direct airflow of the propeller
