Build Log
Great-Planes F-14 Tomcat (prop jet)

Got this a few months ago at the hobby shop (leftover unwanted stock).

Goal:

1. Convert it to electric power.
Power: O.S. 50 Brushless, 100Amp ESC, 6cell.
2. Electric retracts.
3. Will see what comes up on the way.

The instructions start from the Stabs & Fins assembly, then to the Wing followed by the Fuse.

I personally love building wings but Im going to start with the fuse first due to its complexity.

Sub-assembling the four sides that will make the nose section and the ducts (working against the plans as you never know with these die cut stuff).

There's way too many gaps on the glue joints due to the die cut process so I'm having to seal them.

This kit would be awesome as a lazer cut kit.

How was the build, do you remember?

I have never seen one fly, Wonder how she would push through the air.

Going to finish all the sub-assemblies today and then we can start putting the main structure together, this thing is like prepping to build two fuses when its actually only one.

Been going over all the bulkheads, more then I'm used too in a 60 size bird.

Done all the sub-assemblies (the structure should go fast together).

Now comes the fun part.

SK I have mine all framed up and ready to cover but with a glow engine .
I stoped the build about 3 years ago and now I want to convert to e-power.
I used Spring air retracts and many many changes to the control /servo plans because I wanted more of a direct connection .
Also I was told by many of the glow guys that the front landing gear is a bear on grass and will be a problem . I have robart struts on mine so I am hoping that will help .
I also plan on adding a flap function in the wings reducing the size of alerons

I'm also planning on making changes to the servo layout, planning to use the four tail servos for elevators & rudders with an added servo in the nose for steering (on the plan the outboard tail servos are for elevators and the inboard tail servos are for engine throttle and mechnical retracts.
As far as the wing goes, I'm planning to eliminate the single servo and tourqe rod system for twin aileron servos.

Also planning on using electric retracts (need to order them ).

BTW, did you get the recommended spinner? Where did you find one?

Jacob

Done with the main structure of the ducts.

Next would be to sheet the bottom of the ducts and start working on the servo trays before sheeting the top rear of the ducts.

Need to order the Robert Electric Retracts as we are going to need to start working on the retract mounts very soon.

Nice job your moving fast , you motivating me to get mine out !! As soon as winter gets in town I am going to start again on the project thanks to your motivation .
I am going to do a non scale scheme but I like the white bottom , wave , gray patter like the jets found on the Nimitz .
Don't know if your a fan of Hobby King but they have some good electric powered three gear sets .
Also forgot to answer your question , I got the original spinner from Tower when the plane was still available
