Lockheed 8A Sirius / Altair

I just completed a build thread for a Lockheed 8A Sirius and it's sister craft, the Altair. It's accompanied with a full set of plans. The thread has some history of this great Golden Age airplane and techniques used in it's construction. I'm interested in seeing others build a copy, from the plans and thus validate them .....or give feedback for corrections.

The plans are at......... http://dghylin.fatcow.com/

The thread is at ........ http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45812

Thanks and great flying

Very nice, but I think there is a balsa build section elsewhere.

Oops, it sure looks like a balsa build. The plans seemed to be for a balsa build, so I made the assumption.

Thank You all........

Rusty I don't know how you can look at those plans and think Balsa, unless you build with 1/4" ribs, don't use stringers under the fuse skin and don't ever look at leader notations.

Under the paint is a little filler in places and MinWax as primer. The wheel pants, which are also foam, also have a layer of veil fiberglass and epoxy for durability. I use wood in a few places where foam won't take the stress.

So have I got anyone interested in building one???

They "look" like balsa plans, lets put it this way, and be done with it. (I only looked at one 'page' with the wings, and seen ribs, with what apprears to be spar locations cut into them. Simular to what balsa ribs look like.)

GPW,
You got it.... the plans could not only make a Sirius and Altair, but could be adapted for a Vega or an Orion. But you are on your own there.
If I built another, I'd mod the Wing for operational retracts and make an Altair, because I still think it's the best looking of the set..... and the fastest. I will be working on a set of appendix plans for 1930 Edo floats, so you can do up Charles Lindberg's Sirius Seaplane, that's in the NASM

That's a gorgeous model. Proof that foamies don't have to be plain looking.

Truely a spectacular build . You should be very proud of the model you have produced. If I weren't so tied up with other builds I'd be into it. A little later on, it will be the next plane I build. Such a lovely specimen to have modeled, it realy is a stunning plane.
Congratulations.

Andrew.
