Sterling Albatros DIIA

I got started on this a little while ago. One of the old Sterling kits that I had up on my shelf for a long time. It should make a nice electric conversion. I am planning on aileron, rudder and elevator with a 12 amp speed control and 18g brushless outrunner.

Getting started

These old kits were typically die smashed, but I must have gotten one from an early run when the dies were nice and sharp. I still like to trim the parts with an x-acto #11 before trying to remove from the sheets.

Cool build. I have a set of plans for this kit from a friend.

Good luck

Following along. Have a few old sterling kits I've been contemplating doing this to.

aileron controls

I got the idea for the aileron controls from another build. Starting with a couple sketches and fabricating the control horns from stiff paper board then fiber-glassed. The cables will route through the bottom wing passing through guides below the control surface, The servo connects to a control horn for pull pull actuation.

Most Excellent! I also have one of these kits (unopened) on my to do shelf. I will be watching closely and I like what I have seen so far! Are you going to sheet the fuselage? That is one of the things that scares me away from doing an Albatros. Just like painting lozenges has kept me away from a Fokker D VI for 15 years ! (And yes there is a post on the WWI page of my purgatory).
Regards, Brad

Good to see one of these being built, as we don't see them often. Built a number of Sterling kits in recent times. I had this one on the want list forever, but ended up building the Comet DVa, as it's never converted (for some good reasons) but flies well. The proportions make the Albatros D models nice flyers. I used similar gear, with a 12A ESC and 18 gram outrunner. Managed to balance with a sheeted fuse at 11.5oz AUW with forward mounted tail servos with no ballast, using a TP 3s-480.

I am sheeting the forward section with 1/64" ply veneer and balsa stringers to just aft of the cockpit opening. I was concerned that sheeting the whole fuselage it would add too much weight aft of the balance point. Also I am hoping to do a camo paint scheme, no lozenges.

Kit plastic parts

Here are a couple shots of the plastic parts pieces. I cut aluminum tubing for axles and cemented in place inside the wheel halves joined together and sanded smooth. The dummy motor needs a few more details added for radiator hoses and cap, maybe some wiring and spark plugs.

Paul,

Looking good, you're making quick progress! (quicker than me, at least, my build thread is HERE.) I've picked the same scheme for the same reason for my D.II build (Max Böhme, D.910/16, if you need the serial number). Most of the original black & white photos are around online, as well as more color profiles; if you have any trouble finding them, I can dig through some old links. There are a few different interpretations of it out there; no doubt you'll beat me to the paint booth, so it will be interesting to see which interpretation you go with.
