SAAB JA37 VIGGEN easy build depron plans

I have been thinking of a easy build depron viggen for a long time now. I have searched for plans but I couldn´t find anything so now i decided to make my own.
That started my first CAD-project...

I have two main reasons to make a viggen. First of all I´m swedish and i´m raised close to a military airfield. At that time (80´s) the viggen airplanes flew very often. They are really cool airplanes!
The other reason is the low wing. It´s easy to make a simple box type fuselage and keep optimal airflow to the edf.

The acctual plans still need some more work. I will post them in a day or two.

Best regards

Haha! Of course not. Neither the model.
This is just how the model will look before sanding.

I was searching for Viggen builds, found this.

I just PMed him asking for further details. Conceptually looks very much like what you want to do.

That is my build thread. It was a great project. The ducted prop configuration was underpowered. You can see that in the videos imbedded in the thread. I reduced the KV of the motor and increased the pitch and performance improved while still running a 30-40 amp speed control on 3s. I would go with some kind of a lightweight fan unit if I were to do it again. The thrust line was always an issue. The flat bottom wing made it easy to build but having the exhaust exit up high caused pitch issues that were improved but never overcome. Power off the airplane floated like a feather.

The concept of a lightweight depron viggen is a good one. It is a cool looking airplane that is not modeled very much. Lots of wing area. I would not get too wrapped up in moving canards and other gizmos. Built light with a fixed canard with a little incidence like Ziroli has on his plans, this airplane will fly well if you get the thrust line issues worked out.

I am not sure if the plans are still available. The Ziroli plans would be a great place to start. The fuse shape is very rounded which makes building more labor intensive but makes for a great looking plane. I also experimented with .7 oz glass cloth over the depron to make the foam more dent resistant. It worked well but added weight. Even with the cloth, the model was very light for what it was.

Good luck!

Scott

Yes. I have seen that one. Impressive!
But with this one i want a simple design. Just cut out the foam and glue it together. And of course some sanding...
Steve "jetset44" Shumate has been very inspirational. Check his beatiful models if you have missed them.

After getting much appreciated help from Scott I started to build mine using traditional
balsa-ply tech. I decided to go with HET 70mm system.
I have all structures ready - I just got distructed with other projects. I will post the pictures
later.
After watching all possible pictures and videos of Viggen I decided that the very
thin and round walls of the air intakes are very characteristics features - I moulded them from thin ply.
Good luck with your build!

I think a 70mm is hart to fit in the original size. It is made for 60-64mm fan and 4s 1800mAh lipo.
This is how a wemotec 480 looks inside the fuse:

I am going to give this a try . Foam is all cut out. I am going to change a few things Peter. I have a RC Lander Rafale with working Canards and it flys so well, I think I can mod your plans to 70mm with working canards as well. In this pkg size it will be very fast.I think I will build in more foam and make the design edges more round.

Make sure to build a lip around the air intake otherwise you will kill plenty of Amps for nothing.
