F6F Park Flyer

I was looking for a project for a quiet park flier that would be easy to see, reasonably slow flying and and looked like an old WW2 fighter. I took a look at the materials I had on hand and this F6F is what I came up with.

45 inch span, OAL 32 1/2 inches and about 382 square inches of wing area. The wing and horizontal stab was placed near the thrust line. Over sized control surfaces to keep the kids happy and plenty of expo to tame it down for the old guy.

Iíve had good results with the equipment I buy from the folks at Heads Up R/C. I had these parts on hand
9G Servos

EMax 2220/10 and an 11x3.8 SF prop

I used a scaled up a 3 view to get the basic shapes and drew the patterns directly on the foam sheets. I used a thin maple spar for the wing and balsa for the hinge line on the stabs. The foam used was a combination of FFF and DTF. Painted with a brush using the Apple Barrel acrylics from Wally World.

The upper fuselage half has tabs that align the wing and stab as well as seat in pockets in the lower fuselage half. I think the wood workers would call it mortise and tenon construction.

The F6 weighed 9 ounces painted before electronics added. I didnít weigh it after assembly. Just took it to the park and turned it loose. Flies great and tools around at 1/2 throttle. Accelerates vertically out of a hover and rolls like a bandit when you put the stick hard over.

Overall, this was a fun project to build and itís a hoot to fly. I'm heading back to the garage to see what may be in the parts bin. Might need a Tony or Zero to keep the HellCat company

Regards,

Connie

Thanks CB,

Fun to build and a blast to fly. Some times you just get lucky.
