Build Log
Mighty Small DC3

Recently I went to the RC Swap Meet in Perry GA. There was a guy there who owns a holly Shop in Tallahassee FL. He had a bunch of small planes for sale. The price was right so I bought 2. Getting home I look closer and I found they were not the normal Park Zone micro with a brick. To my suprise they had a 6 channel, 2.4 gz receiver with a seperate speed control and 3 each 2 gram servos and a great little motor, which I tested and it produced between 45-50 grams of thrust on one of those small Park Zone battery. Since I like real airplanes over foam planes I decided I would build a DC3 and use the 2 motors. I looked thru my old plans and found a Gullows DC3. This plane was never designed to fly so I thought I could build a light enough plane for these componants

Hey Skipper,

Welcome to RCG, and what an impressive intro! Can you give us more detail on how you built the landing gear?

Great looking build. There is nothing like a 1930s airliner.

Very nice!

Will the LG be fixed, or retract? I would think to save weight it will be fixed. Sure does look good!!

Good idea I believe adding the 2 inches to the wing.

I'll be watching your build for sure.

I am working on the landing gear. Still work in progress. It will be retract tho. Will keep you posted with pictures and dialog. Would much rather build than fiddle with posting.
Thank you all for the observations and kind comments

I did some work this weekend the airframe is 80% completed and the all up is 60 gm. I do not know if that is good or bad.

Very nice work skipper. Where have you been hiding? The retracts are clever, good job.

Nice job on the retracts!

What is the span and area of the wing?

I did some today still have to make the rudder. the span is 37.5 in and have not figured the area. plan to remake the center section. when the landing gear is working better. As to the price I think I paid $95 for two planes .Also they will be at SEEF so you might get a good deal there I will check on the parts price then. I installed one set into a 25" american eaglet kit that was finished.the all up of 58gm with 6 gm in the nose flyes scale @ 30% power at full it is way over kill. That is it have a nice day Skipper

well I have it going my way. the landing gear is working great. I worked on the stab & elv .The all up weight is 80 gm. Tested the two mtrs and they put out 80 gm for the first 30 sec then drop to 74 gm I hope larger battery and wires bring it up a bit. thanks for looking in Skipper

Hi Skipper – very, very nice work – looks very as though your AUW id going to be impressively low – how do you plan to cover the airframe?

I think one of your best options would be a lightweight covering like Parklite. It is easy to use, shrinks well and comes in a decent selection of colors.
Second choice would be silkspan and dope. You are going to want the lightest option due to the limited power you have on tap.
