Choices to replace GWS 350 C motor

Been flying e-starter for a couple of months now. Originally had major problems getting into the air. It came with speed 400 and a 1060 prop. Long story short my batteries weren't strong enough and plane would drop out of the sky. Broke tail section off but have sinced glued back.

I have since replaced my batts with 9.6volts, 8 cell 1400 AA NIMH. Also use a CC Pixie 20P Speed Control. Flew better but the 400 motor is quite heavy and makes the plane a heavy flier as well. Also messes with the CG as well. I then replaced the 400 with the GWS 350 and much better.

New problem is I just burned out the motor and it only had a minimal number of flights.

Question: What motor options do I have that will mount the same as the GWS and still be able to use the CC 20P and my battery packs. Batts are too new to replace and I am not ready to move into Lipos. Probably will make that change in the spring.

What are my options to at least maintain the 350 performance or actually increase a bit?

You probably can't do much better until you go brushless/li-poly. With 8 cells, you can't expect more than about 20 flights for the 350. Try a APC 9X7 prop for a little more performance and a little longer motor life.

I run a hi max 2015-4100 in a d box with an 11x5 or 12x6 on lipos on a 13oz plane, way better than the can motor in both power and efficiency.

You've hit the same brick wall I did. 350 motors burn up fast on 8 cells! If you want to stay with the NiMH (like I did), I can highly recommend the brushless AXI 2212-26. Fits in a GWS 400 gearbox (with very minor mod), but WITH NO GEARS. Performs great on 8 cells (much better than the 350), but you'd also need to get a brushless ESC like the Phoenix 10 (or to be safer, the 25). This doesn't meet all your criteria, but I'm afraid this is the plague of brushed motors.

I bet the AA battery pack is heavy as well (by today's standards).
You have 3 choices, as I see it. All of which are gonna cost you course.
Go the lipo route. IT doesn't have to cost the earth - you can get the older etech 1200 2s pack for around $25, or less. Then build your own lipo charger - lots of choices, and very simple designs.
Go the brushless route, but choose a diy cd-rom type kit from ACW - it will fit into
your gws gearbox. Of course you will need to buy a new controller - the ph10 will do nicely with the cd-rom.
3rd choice - both of the above.

i have been flying a21 oz plane wth 8 cellsx 1050 kans/mah. 5.33-1 gws box, 9x6 apc sf prop.
with a Sagami 280 bb, aka tower electrifly 280 bb. about 25 bucks for the motor.
i did advance the timing for reverse rotation to match the gear box, slips into gws gb cheapest solution next to lipo/ brushless/new esc.
