I don't mind supplying the batteries if they would include a charging circuit in the radio. That would be better in some situations. The rechargeable pack that came with my Taranis is pretty bad, for example. I'd rather it just had space for 4 to 6 Eneloops.

I like the simple and fairly clean design of this radio. The dual protocol support makes for a lot of receiver choices (including the FrSky-based compatibles). I'd like to know what the programming is like. Once you get used to OpenTx, it's kind of hard to give up the flexibility, but some people prefer a more "canned" solution. So far, unfortunately, only the Aurora transmitters in Hitec's product line have some important basic features like servo travel limits *after* channel mixing. The others offer only end point adjustment, which is applied before channel mixing. This sucks when setting up flying wings / delta wings.

Outclassed?

I'm a fan of Hitec products and their customer support can't be beaten but I do think that Spektrum has them beat many times over with their just introduced DX6. When you compare features vs price, unless I'm really missing something, the DX6 is superior by many times over.

Have I missed something?

2 cents worth,
Ed

Certainly can't deny the features of Spektrum radios. They're tempting. Due to personal experience and observations of local flyers I'm pretty reluctant to seriously consider buying Spektrum at this time. I won't say never though.

Yeah, several guys at our club have crashed due to Spektrum radios loosing bind during flight. NEVER a problem with my Tactic/SLT!

You'll love the Flash 7. I was going to get the TTX850 myself as an upgrade to my 650 but... hear a lot of reports like yours, not really worth the cash. The Hitec has the programming and latency of a Futaba and the ease of use like Spektrum, for sub $200.

Yeah, used the Tactic TTX650 for a year and half. Like it, works good, feels OK, looks good. That 850 had a throttle channel problem, you can see it on you tube.

I almost ordered the Hitec to begin with, sure wish I had of now! Thanks for the review....

You can see the problem I had new out of box on youtube, throttle channel didn't work right.

Now, for what I didn't like, the stick gimbals weren't as smooth as my TTX650, the face and display isn't as nice, and the side sliders are much to stiff when using during flight.

Radio just had a cheap look and feel to me.....
