New Air Hogs Zip Wing powered glider

I saw this at Target for 14.99 and being an AH fanatic, I had to get it.

it features a 22" wingspan motorized foam on carbon fiber body with a folding prop. In all a good concept design; however, I couldn't understand why AH opt to use AAA batteries. AAA's are notoriously heavy.

I made sure to use 2 new fresh Duracell AAA (both measured 1.57v). I also made sure all surfaces were straight and true. The installation was straightforward. Just plug the wings in, then tape it in, plug the stabilizer in, tape it in. Done.

unfortunately, with the weight of the AAA batteries, it felt very heavy for it's size. The airframe came out to 40grams, and the batteries were 22 grams for an AUW of 62 grams. I did roughly 10 flights, each time making adjustments and they all failed. Conclusion - it's simply too heavy to fly.

I've flown many, many AH planes, and this is the first AH plane that I'm disappointed in.

well, check it out...

Air Hogs Zip Wing crash, crash, crash! (4 min 8 sec)

Why not just stick lipo's in and eliminate the problem.

banks to the left…..maybe its from propeller/motor torque ? or the wing trailing edge need to be adjusted to compensate or maybe some rudder adjustment …also check the cg

and yeah put a small 1 cell lipo on that at 3.7 volts it will probably work no problem

I'm with Kamvo. I think she want to fly with a left back. Check the balance. See if she's heavy on the left side. If that proves to be good then it could be a wing warp. Work a little trim tab to raise that left wing.

Now all you have to worry about it will it fly away. I'd rather have a plane that goes for a second than crashes than a plane that just flies away.

I had a friend (Dick Garrett) in Indianapolis, Indiana that had a little plane he built that flew free flight. He fired it up and gave it a through. It circled up to where it looked like a little dot on a piece of paper. Then the motor stopped. The wind was from the north. The plane headed straight when the motor stopped and it was on it way to Kentucky. Dick and his son floowed it for a while until they ran out of road to stay with it. So that;s what I meant about I'd rather have a crash than a fly away.

I use to trim my planes so that the had a little down and little left or right so If the single failed they would at least be in the area.

You could go to plan 'B'. Put a small RC brick in it for RC and use 1S battery. Looks like most the work has already been done.

Now that I'm in my seventies most my RCing is building rather than flying. I've really lost my skills. But I can still do RC helicopters at least.\

Good luck with it. Maybe I'll get one and do the RC mod to it.

I'm sure I could make it fly with some mods, but the goal of the review/vid was to fly it as is, vanilla out of the box provided by AH; And as is, this thing will never fly.

I've tried many things, and I'm quite sure the banking is just the porky weight causing it to stall and bank left.

I've tried putting in rudder to compensate at no avail.
also, there's very little torque on the motor

anyhow, just thinking aloud, but if I can't make it fly, just imagine all the soccer moms buying it for their kid.

Agreed! that's probably what I'm gonna end up doing to mine. Either that or it's going back to Target.

on a side note, if anyone picks one up and gets it to fly vanilla, pls get vid before you convert.

depending on how the wings connect to the fuse - looks like it could be a wingeron candidate with regular rx, 5g servos and 2s 5g or 10g bl motor

Looked like tipstalling to me. ?

But if it worked looks like it'd be a fun toy.

And those Airhogs AeroAces are what got me started in RC Flight. They were unbelievable and awesome for thier time.

Oh yea! Don't get me started on the AA
God knows why AH discontinued those.

Anyways, yes it does look like tip stalls. The thing is just too heavy and not enough power. Wish AH would of put a 1s in it...would of been fun.

I hope they don't repeat what Estes did- that is make gorgeous airframes that never got off the ground.
