New Product
Balsa Avro Arrow Kit (speed 400)

Here’s my latest work which will be available for sale in about a month.

It’s an Avro Arrow I designed that features laser-cut interlocking construction for a quick and straight build.

Specs:
Wings span = 19.165”
Wing area = 180 in²
Length = 27.9”
Power = S400 or brushless in-runner
Ready to fly weight = 13-14oz
Wing loading = 10 oz/ft²

The plane is easy to hand launch and lands nice and slowly. I have not been able to get the prototype to do anything strange and it is proving to be a very predictable and safe flyer.

The scratch built prototype is powered by a TrickRC S400 motor with an Apogee 1570 2S1P battery. This gives very good performance along with good duration. I have not timed my flights yet.

The first laser cut version will be powered by a Medusa MR-028-032-1900 brushless with an Apogee 1050 3S1P battery pack. This should give 7 minutes of wide open flight so I will probably get around 10 minutes of fast flying.

** Nov. 27, 2007 --- BACK IN PRODUCTION!! **

I got to see Rob's new Arrow kit proto last evening and I can tell you it is awesome.

The interlocking laser design looks very well thought of. You see it's not his first try at laser. And his covering job is simply stunning.

The scale rendition seems right on.

There was a very quick line-up of avid buyers around the table...

My only concern with all this is that the large Pete project has been postponed for this one.

Honestly, he's got a winner there.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Mark, I do not have any videos of the plane but I'll be getting some once spring arrives.

More build pics to follow.

Rob, what is the expected price for the laser cut kit?
Looks great and appears to be a quick build as well.

RAFster,

Not sure on the pricing yet but I should know by the end of next week when the final files are off.

It is a very quick build. I think most people could have it framed up in 2 or 3 evenings.

More pics soon.

Include me too!

I've got to test my depron version soon. (yes, the stand-the-heck-way-way-off-scale version from last year's design contest.) Of course, depron is a tad fragile at sub-zero temperatures and my use of Gorilla Glue may not be the best adhesive for the job.

First step is to find a reasonably-priced 10-cell nimh charger.

Keep up the thread!

madrob,

Really nice techniques and cool way to create the curved surfaces with minimal fuss and sheeting. Did you figure this out in CAD, how many pieces it would take and former shape to create the curved surface like this?

Depending on price...I'm interested in the plane.
It will be interesting to see how the S400 3S Lipo plane compares to the brushless setup.

The Arrow is an interesting design and one that has an interesting history.

RAFster,

Yes, the plan was designed in CAD although I did it in 2D, not 3D. It's still faster for me to use 2D with my system as creating a cut file from a bunch of 3D parts would take a very long time. I simply use 2D drafting techniques and it works fairly well.

I am about to install my CAD upgrade so we'll see if that is any quicker designing in 3D.

Cheers!
