9.5 minute flight With RED EPIC

Hey Guys,
Thought I would share with you our rig we have been working on and flying for the past few months. We started off with a "Stock" Cinestar 8 from Quadrocopter using all MK Electronics with the QC3328 motors. We started getting asked to fly the RED EPIC cinema camera but couldn't because of flight times and over-heat issues using the MK Electronics. SO we decided to upgrade. I wanted to stay with the MK FC until the new FC from FreeFly Systems gets released. Here are the specs on our copter:

CineStar 8 frame with 500mm booms
MT3515-15
Xoar 15x5
Castle Ice 50 ESCs
AbuseMark I2C-PWM converter
MK FC, Navi, GPS
6s 6000mAh Turnigy Nano-Techs in Parallel
FreeFly 3 axis gimbal

With our normal setup flying the 5dMKII we get about 15-16minutes of flying time. With the Epic we got 9.5minutes! I am very happy with how it flew! Once the video is finished from ShowTime I'll post it. A few pics for you:

It's not unfortunately. I need to save up money before I can get a RED for myself. HA!

You got lucky that they did not want some huge lens for that shoot.

The lens they ended up going with was a 24mm L series... it was HEAVY but the footage came out awesome!

Great looking setup! How does that beast handle in the wind? I'm trying to decide between x8 or flat 8 for our next rig.

Best,

Tom

It's a little floaty in the wind.. The big props really catch it. I've gotten pretty used to flying it though. Just have to be on-top of the throttle.

Nice work.
The decision to go aftermarket ESC's is commendable and is probably setting the standard for future heavy lift rigs when using MK FC.

Do you have the luxury of posting some footage taken from the Epic?

After market ESC are the only way you can get the MK electronics to handle a load like that.

We are waiting for the footage to be edited. I thought the video would be done today but it hasn't posted yet. Once it's available it will be on Showtime network's website under the Floyd Mayweather fight page.

Josh, I still want to talk with you about an upcoming piece I have for you to shoot here in the valley next month. I look for you at the bowl, told the guys to let me know when you're there (seems to be Tuesdays). I've left messages and no response. I can't do it and thought of you as they require a Canon 5D like yours, but with a 8mm lens to achieve a "circular fisheye" of the subject on the ground and you at about 100' above. Interested or not? Please let me know one way or another.
Thanks,
Jared
