Build Log
Micro Stinson Reliant

Having just finished two of Peter Rake's micro designs, the Martin MO-1 and the De Havilland DH-6, I got this insatiable urge to build another micro. The Stinson Reliant, a beautiful airplane from the 1930s, caught my eye.

Giving credit where credit is due, I am building this from an old Comet plan for a 25" wingspan Reliant that has been modified for RC and CAD drawn by Paul Bradley. Paul has built a rubber powered free flight version and an electric powered RC version. His RC version is controlled and powered by the HZ P-51 motor and brick. He has threads here on RCgroups. Plans for both versions can be found on his web site.

Keeping within the spirit of micro models I did reduce the size of the plan by 20% for a wingspan of 20 inches. The original plan uses two main thicknesses of balsa, 1/16" and 1/8". For my smaller version I kept all of the 1/16" thick parts the same thickness and and reduced the thickness of the 1/8" parts to 3/32". I intend on using a Vapor brick for control and an HZ P-51 motor, or possibly a Radian motor, for power.

I began construction with the fuselage. The attached photos show the sequence.

I'm seriously thinking about doing this scheme.

I want to build one!
There was a plastic kit with that paint scheme, I believe.

I have the Comet 25" SR-7 kit in my stash patiently waiting to be built. With that fat nose it is a great candidate for an outrunner. Certainly one of the most charismatic of those 30s planes. Your build looks great already.

Hey Larry,
Looks good so far. Chris Moes did a 20" one in RC Micro World. His version used 3/32 sticks and still came out pretty light.

Nice work Larry. I look forward to seeing your 20" version of the model completed and flying.

Welcome to the thread Paul. I'm impressed with your plan and hopefully I can do it justice. I'm working on the power pod now.

That's a great scheme you picked. It is coming together quickly, but it takes more time to cut the parts as to assemble sometimes. Paul, thats a nice trick with the jig to mate the nose to the fuse.

A pair to fly is never a bad deal. ..
kind of like classic motorcycle , having two can improve odds one is rideable at all times

Looking good Larry.

By the way, did you ever get your power issues sorted out on your DH6? Mine flies like a champ, ROG's in 4 feet, and limited acro is a piece of cake.

Speedy01 happy to have been entertaining. For sure Paul is a talented builder.

Thanks Tom. I was just today doing some modifications on the DH-6 that I hope will resolve the problem. Will post in the DH-6 thread if I am successful.
