Picture and the manual for MK2 Sonic are now up at Tower website. And I'm not liking what I'm seeing. Many changes and none really look to be improvements:

Hatch is much smaller. Wings now glue together and mount in a saddle under fuse. Servos now inaccessible and inverted under wing. One piece elevator with shorter rudder.

Does anyone see these changes as improvements?

That is a great spot for cooling and there must not be room in the fuse for an ESC any more, but that looks horrid and I'd never buy one of these.

I think the new wing attachment IS an improvement. That being said I only bought mine because it was $65! How much is it now?

EDIT: I kinda' like the looks of their .46-.55 "Scanner".

I guess it could be considered an improvement as there are some minor issues with the current setup. The serious downside I see is that the saddle cutout in the lower fuse probably required the smaller hatch to retain enough axial (bending) strength in the area of the fuse over the wing.

The larger Phoenix Tiger Sport wing mounting design is like the new Sonic - including a small hatch. I really like my Tiger but the small hatch is a little inconvenient.

I think Tower has indicated the Scanner is coming.

Looks more like a Warlord. The Convertible would have been nice to have on this side of the pond.

so my sonic is done. well i still need a receiver. its on the way though.
im using a power 25 on a 4s 3000 and a 11x7 prop. i use this same set up on a pulse 25 and it works great. this set up draws about 50 amps.

so the dreaded part...balancing.....
verdict....................

i did remove more wood than first pic shows. i removed 1 more panel at rear of fuse on both sides.
elevator servo installed in the throttle spot to move cg forward.
motor extended a little more forward to help also.

the manual says to balance at 65 to 70 mm behind leading edge on wing.
im at 68mm with no weight added.. hells yeah

also using wing nut conversion for wing attach

sonic build weight.

4.06 lbs with 4s 3000 lipo
64.90 oz. with 4s 3000 lipo.

3.292 lbs. no lipo
52.65 oz. no lipo.

lipo is 12.20 oz.

just for fun :
the pulse 25E weighs:
3.20 lbs no lipo.
51.10 oz. no lipo.

I still need a receiver. so that will add a few ounces.
at this point the pulse 25 is 2 ounces lighter than the sonic.
im very pleased with the results.
I think a smaller/lighter lipo would start to push this plane quickly to the tail heavy side.

it should be a decent flying aero-chine

That looks great basser, and it should fly very well.

My all stock Sonic weighs 4lb 1oz with the 3300 4s installed. But I used much lighter micro servos. I considered mounting the motor forward a bit like you did, but ended up just putting 1/2 ounce of weight on the inside of each fuse cheek.

I'm looking forward to hearing your flight report.

I am strongly considering copying your look for my sonic. After seeing pictures of yours, I can't stand to look at mine!

Aw.....your going to hurt your little Sonic's feelings. It can't help it if it's a bit homely. And it trys hard to make it up to you with fine flight manners.
