250 quad range

Hi Guys

I was wondering about those who fly quadcopters, what radio do you have and how far away Do you fly from yourself? I know that range isn't a predictable thing, but I just got a 250 quad with a spektrum radio and have no idea at all how far away I can fly it without losing control or what I can fly behind. So far I have stayed within 500 feet of me in an open field

Thanks, Zane

What radio is it and what receiver do you have on the quad?

It mostly depends on how you positioned your receiver/s on your model. The environment your are flying in plays a big role as well. If you mount your RX in a good spot, then ~1000-1500 meters is a realistic range. If your RX is in a less then ideal position, then you can expect ~300-800 meters. My DJI F450 with AR7610 RX + Satellite RX, and DX9 radio starts fail-safing/link losses at around 1000 meters. The antennas of both RX have most of the flight a clear view to the TX antenna. I probably could get more range out of it if start experimenting with the RX positions, but 1000 meters is plenty for my needs when flying FPV.

What exactly makes it a good spot? Right now RX is front middle, right behind FPV camera, and the video TX is at the opposite end of the quad

It's that spot where the RX antennas have a clear view to your TX antenna at every possible attitude of your model in flight. Since this is not always possible, you need to compromise. Antenna diversity is also a very important subject. I hope someone else on here has more time to give you more info about this. You can also start a online research. It pays off!
