Thunder Tiger Trainer 40

Hi guys, I'm not really a beginner, but my son is... I've been building and flying for almost 20 years.. I was given a TT trainer 40 about two years from a gentlemans wife that worked with my (at the time ) wife. He had apparently, intended to learn how to fly upon purchasing the plane about 15 years ago. Well, to make a long story short he never did anything with it but bang it up from moving it around his garage. He gave it to his wife to give to me knowing that I would breathe new life into it.
My son was 4 years old at that time and a bit to young to fully understand the basics of an Rc airplane.. He's now 6 and has been going to the field with me since he was a baby.. I figured now would be a good time to start instructing him. So, this plane that I received was in new, but rough shape ! So here are some pics of it before I started the tear down. When its all said and done, it will be under the Xmas tree with a huge bow on it.!!
I cant wait to see his face.. He has seen it, but I put it up in the rafters right after receiving it.. I figured when he got a bit older he would appreciate it. I have so many planes up there I'm sure he's forgotten about this one, since I never made a big deal out of it.
I'm going to change it up so much that he will think its a brand new plane. Hopefully !!
Here's some pics.

I remember when I got my first plane, I was 10 and I could not wait to get it in the air. I had wanted one for 2 years and I had the greatest feeling and I will never forget it.

That's a good flying plane. Back about ten years ago they were THE trainer at our field, as the price point was right and they came with the excellent Thunder Tiger GP42.

Almost ready to cover the fuse.. I need to fill one small imperfection and then onto covering.. I'm just going to do a very basic covering scheme.

Finished covering the base color.. Here's a quick mock up.. I had some graffix cut for the top of the wing just to give it a personal touch, and of course some bitchen flames for the sides of the fuse.. I'll clear coat the vinyl in the future...

Thunder Tiger Trainer 40

Sanded the entire top plastic cabin with 400 grit wet/dry paper.. I'm going to clear it all, to prevent the fuel from deteriorating it..In the process, I sanded a little bit of the black completely out of one of the windows. No problems, I just masked and painted it black again.. I really want this plane to last a long time. It's going to be worth the extra work. This was my very first airplane which, I lacked to mention earlier on. Mine only lasted a couple of minutes.. I had an instructor, and when he went with me the plane came home every time. I wrecked it in no time when I thought I was ready and went out on my own..
In fact, I almost crashed it right into me !! It went in about 10 feet away, and I felt bits and pieces of the wreckage hit my legs.
I knew that I was not ready to fly on my own, but for some strange reason, I thought I could pull it off !!

My Thunder Tiger Trainer 40 wasn't the ready to fly version like this one. I had to assemble it and buy a radio / engine package.. I chose an MDS 46 for power.. I'm still partial to MDS engines to this day.. They kind of "seem to take me back".
This plane was the ready to fly (RTF) version with the Thunder Tiger bearing supported GP. 42 bolted to the nose. I cant wait to complete it, and putt around the sky with my sons plane..

More to come ...

I've been working on it the last couple of days.. I got the tail section glued and the rudder hinged and installed, along with the top cabin.. Pretty much everything to do with the fuse is complete, less servo/pushrods and the final decals. Servos and pushrods are in it but, have yet to be dialed in with my radio..
I'll upload some more pics in the days to come.. Now onto the wing, wich I decided to add wing tips to it, the plastic ones rotted off..

More to come...

Here's the latest...I'm preparing to put in another long night on it... Fuse is complete, now onto the wing..
All servos hooked up and ready for action, landing gear and all hardware back on the bird..
I hope to have it super close by the end of the morning.. I thought this was an ARF..? I've got alot of time in this thing.. It will be well worth it.... :-)~
