My Flair K8 kit

YIPPY SKIPPY!!! Look what the good folks at FedEx brought to me at work this past Tuesday that I purchased from one of the members here at RCG. This build will be a joy as I have wanted one of these kits for quite some time now.

I also have a Svenson 1:6 scale K8B kit purchased here from another member that I will probably build first. It's like Christmas early here.

A wonderful kit. And it also flys nicely!
Have one needing a wing repair (battery switch failed) and another kit in the box.
Lots of help on some good mods found right here on RCG.

Rich,
Interesting, as I was just doing some work on my K8 build and sat down and saw this thread. It's a fun build, but it will take some time.

That's a great kit and I kick myself for never having acquired one! You might trace all the parts onto the plans (if building it isn't enough !) The fuse parts should be copied if anything since they would be the most difficult to reproduce.

Can't wait to see the build. Are you gonna put it on RCAerotowing.com, too?

I'll probably do just that, but I'll be building the Svenson 1:6 K8B first.

It's still available on Flair's web site http://www.flairmodels.co.uk/Aircraf...caleframes.htm and dealers listed in the US.

The kit hasn't been available for years, the website is very outdated, as well as the dealer list. That being said, I was able to get a replacement canopy this last year from a USA dealer.
Rumors (?!) in the past said they were converting over to laser cutting, which would make the kit even better. But it hasn't happened.
Still one of the best and least expensive scale sailplane full kits ever made.

Hi guys!

I would like to copy paste the reply I received from Flair. It seems we haven't so much hope to see this model in the future:

Hi Alessandro,

This model is no longer in production, so you will not find it in any shops anymore.

Kind regards

Justin

Subject: Request information about Alexander Schleicher K8

Hello,

I'm an Italian modeler and I'm not able to find the model in subject. Can you redirect me to one of your local reseller or directly sell me this model?

How much is it (including S&H)?

Thanks for your reply

Best regards
Alessandro

Thanks FrankS but 2 of the USA dealer hobby shops are closed and the other doesn't list it. It's been out of production for some time.

Yep sorry, the website is a lot out of date, I know you can still buy Flair kits in the UK but the K8 doesn't seem to be one of them.

I'm on my second Flair Ka8 and like you was able to buy one NIB off a friend of mine. It's a lose to the sport that this kit is no longer available. I have modified the kit a little with plug in wings and a fixed elevator drive that operated both elevators by simply sliding the horizontal stab in position and securing with a self tightening latch. I prefer plug and fly assembly at the field.
Sheeting the leading edge takes just about all my lead weights.

Holy cow, Gene! So that's where the world's supply of lead ended up...!

Knowing that this kit is no longer available, and getting scarcer by the day, has helped me make up my mind to do a full refurb on my Flair Ka8b this winter. After over fifteen years of regular flying, I think it deserves a make-over.

RC-JG,
Not much, but I did get a few things done before the aerotow season started this year. I hope to have it ready for next season but have a few more projects to finish before getting back into Ka-8 construction. At this point the wings need sanding before the ailerons are cut and faced. The fuselage just needs some finish filling and sanding before it is ready to cover. I did get the canopy frame built and the canopy fitted before putting it up on the shelf. Attached are a few photos to show the elevator drive.
