Yep, stuff on the ground ground gets smaller in a hurry! I got to fly from a dry lake bed in SE Oregon for a week in July and got to see my averager at 9.9kts a few times. It was magical! Not so much where we typically fly in the Willamette valley, though...

Our mountain thermals are usually like that. I've hit the canopy quite a few times

Image shows view from the back seat in the Duo on Day 3 of the comp. Typical weather, 3500' cloudbase rising later to just over 5000', we were heavy with full water on-board (200 kgs) so speed high and climb rate not so good. The day improved later as forecast, justifying the water.

Next shot is me collecting day prize. Prize giver on Day 4 was an ex ATA pilot lady from WWII who was stationed at Aston Down and is now 101 years old. The ATA used to deliver new and repaired aircraft to the squadrons during the war. They were always flown solo, unarmed and without radios! Her logbook includes just about all the types used by the RAF during the war including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mosquito etc as well as flying Lancasters and other bombers.
She quickly accepted the Clubs offer of a flight in a K-21 before the grid were launched.

Final shot, I will leave you to identify the glider...but it is always nice to see a drogue chute used.....adds a bit of colour!
There were 3 of this type in the comp which represents half of the UKs examples of the marque. This particular one is the prototype serial number V1.

The comp is now over and I am delighted to say we won! But it was a just!!

Gordon

thats one of the old Schrader HP series I think . Nice to see the drag chutes.

I bought a copy of the video called The Sunship Game, it shows soaring from back in the 70s and theres an older ASW with a drag chute

Not a Schreder design........have another guess!
Enjoyed the Sunship Game. The ASW in that with the chute is an ASW12..AJ Smiths from memory.

oh that soaring would have that much interest again. When each competitor had 2 or 3 ground crew and there were tons of spectators.

Glider is SHK, (17m span) all wood structure with a few glass fairings.
They have very similar performance to ASW-15, Astirs and the early LS-1's.

I almost bought a standard Jantar before my DG100. Someone mentioned that it was difficult for a one man assembly
