Rebuilding a 1/6 Pica Waco

Hello,

I picked up a 1/6 scale built Pica Waco at a swap meet today. It has been completely built and covered with a fabric covering.

I downloaded what I think are the correct plans off of the Outerzone site, but there's no mention of a weight on the plans. The covered plane weighs 4.75 pounds, with no engine, radio, or paint.

I also picked up a Super tiger .61 that I think I will use in it.

Can anyone tell me what the manufacturer recommended weight is for this plane? Also I would love to hear actual people's finished weights, engines, and setups and the resulting flight characteristics, and anything you would recommend.

Thanks, Paul

Don't know about that one, but, my Rake designed version came in at 7lb. It flew very nice on a .90 ST diesel and even better on electric

The only drawback to the .61 would be the prop dia. The cowl is a bit more than 7" in dia. I run a 13x8 on mine with the electric motor. The .90 diesel was swinging a 16" prop.

There is a current build thread in the Balsa Builders forum.

Anyone know the diameter of the evolution 35 35cc radial engine? I bought this kit on this site and I almost just can't help myself not to put a 7cylinder radial in her to do her justice if I can find that'll fit in the cowl. - Justin

A 35cc engine is too large for a .60 sized bipe.

The diameter of that motor is 193 mm, the depth to the point of the rear of the prop is 111 mm, the depth to the front of the cylinders is 80 mm.

Be more concerned about the weight. I had a 160cc in a 21% Waco and it was so very nose heavy.

A buddy of mine had one of these in the early 80's with a Supertigre .61 and it flew beautifully. His was finished in silk and dope, and I don't imagine it was a super light weight example of the design. Lots of wing area, so I think you'll have a nice flying model.
