What is the big deal about a Ground Station?

I'm kinda new to the latest scene with this.

AFAIK it's just for waypoint plotting and bigger FPV feedback??

A ground station is a little different for every user. You might need one for your computer to manage autonomous flight with waypoints and to change or cancel a flight or you have your FPV screen there. But you can also get telemetry data from the aircraft, the same data some people get via OSD. You have to have your receiver for video somewhere and the antennas. You might have a video recorder to document flights.

So it depends on what kind of flights you do. Might fit in a backpack or fill up the back of your van.

One also might have a set of fitty inch sma extensions in the mail for tomorrow that allows him or hardly ever her to put diversity ibc bow tie 900mhz antennas stuck in the windows facing outward allowing a fully mobile chase ground station test tomorrow. Ground stations can cause one to lose sleep with anticipation and are thereby importante. The plan is put both on passenger side of car, conscript a typically unwilling driver, hop on a test run and keep the craft always right ish of the car traveling known country roads and hope to heck rth never triggers.

A "Ground station" for FPV is just all the equipment that is on the ground side. This can be as simple as a pair of video goggles, antenna and battery or as complex as direction antennas on a diversity vRX running on a different RF band that relays to goggles and telemetry with computer, etc, etc.

Is it possible to use a few miles of these to remotely get the craft out of range of the main handheld transmitter?

I have a Dji Ground Station. With the software I download to multicoptern how to fly and then it does so without any contact with the transmitter. It can fly far out of range and then come back as programmed route
