Aussie Foamboarders

Hey guys,

I couldn't find any Aussie foamboard stuff so I thought I'd start something on the Aussie forum.

Its no secret that foamboard has been used to build models for a long time. I have built a few ranging from profile jets to full fused warbirds and I get a real buzz building and then flying them, especially when I would consider some of them better flying than some ARF models that I have owned!

Please feel free to post pics, links, builds, questions, tips and information and anything that might be related to Aussie foamboard builds...........

Foam board, when I first started looking at anything foam I was lucky enough to get some from one of the cinemas as the promotional advertising for a movie was foam board and I ended up getting it free. So with that in hand I tried to take off the paper and just decided to build with it. The end result is an F-111 and I love having it very much.
I use it when I need to so I have a few planes with it built in already.

Over the next few days I am going to start on my next foamboard plane. I've been thinking about building a Zero for a while now so that's probably what it will be

Anyone else building with foamboard?........anyone?

If you go to my blog on here I have a few. You will also see a caribou that is like the F-111 and half of it made with foamboard.
Hope you enjoy. Thats a great little Vamp you have there and seems to track well in the air.

Fantastic F111 Shane. You're right, it is amazing what can be done with a flat piece of foam!

Cheers, my Vamp has a 900mm wingspan and flies quite nicely. I think I'll give the Zero the same span

Some of the guys I fly with are interested in doing a group build of the FliteTest Mustang which is a good way to get people onto the foamboard builds!

I obtained a large sheet of this at one stage and was not sure what to do so i just made a wing,it would be good to get some more and try a scale type build.

And yes it was underpowered but still flew great

Yes, they have some great stuff.
Unfortunately, the kits are not cheap to get from them.

A group of us intend on building the Mustang together from the FliteTest plans.

That is why I created this thread, for others to post about their builds.

$45 to ship a $36 kit that solely consists of flat foam pieces! Epic fail on that one :/

My first scratch foamie, I thought I'd start simple

6mm covered foam board from Office Works (not the cheapest), some HK wing tape and bits laying around the hobby room.
Design and construction process from Experimental Airlines (YT).

A quick test flight proved the CoG way off (my mistake) and needs a heavier motor rather than adding dedicated weight. Work in progress

Big fan of Flite Test planes in fact the their Spitfire is one of the easiest flying and versatile planes I have. It's so forgiving but acrobatic too

Have made their Cruiser and Baby Blender as well. The cruiser I didn't like so much but the Blender was a fave until I destroyed it

I've also started modifying their plans and used the Spit plans to make an Il 2 Sturmovik

The plans also work well at scale. I've started reducing them to 80% and using smaller motors and servos etc had excellent results

Pics below (excuse the horrible paintjob on the Sturmovik, first airbrushing attempt )

Nice work ztied.

Believe it or not, I will be building my Zero based on the Vampire plans! Different planes but the same basic concept - a wing with a fuse and a rear stabiliser

I started on my Zero foamboard build. I made my own plans and then transferred them to the foamboard sheet. I still have to cut them out but it's a 'midnight build' so it will take a little while to be finished

I flew my foamboard Vamp again today and I can honestly say that it is one of my best flying planes
