Build Log
30" Nakajima Ki84 Hayate (Frank)

Cg note: after flying this design a bit I have moved the Cg point forward from where it is noted on the earlier plan drawings (Rev A). 40mm back from the root LE is a better starting point. Rev B drawings show the Cg in this new location

Next up on the scratch build docket is a 30" stick and tissue type playmate for the Wildcat. After reviewing a number of Japanese fighters, I gravitated toward the Ki84 because its proportions lend itself to RC a bit better than the rest. The nose is a little longer for ease of Cg placement, and the wings are long and fairly straight. Plus its a really sleek looking ship.

Technically, the Hayate didn't really become operational until 1944 and by that time the Wildcat was not much of a match. As a result, I doubt that the two ever met in combat but Bosley has already locked up a really nice Zero so here we are.

My understanding is that the Ki84 was a heck of an airplane. The US Army evaluated a captured copy and determined that it was more than a match for the P47 if the Japanese could get enough high octane fuel to feed it. Additionally it was plagued with quality problems in its metallurgy manufacture. In the end 3500 were built and they were respected by Allied pilots.

Framing is done

John--I was hoping to lure you into my little web here.

Bosley, you had my son and me cracking up!

So here's the basic layout: lightweight 1/16" formers and keels with plenty of stringers. The wing will be removeable and there will be a small batt hatch between the upper cowling and canopy. The cowling, canopy, and chin scoop will be vacuum formed.

Now to get the cut files squared away.

Not sure about exact shapes, but...

Bosley has some nice plastic parts for the Zero that Sparky makes. Cowl, canopy, gun 'bumps' and spinner. Wonder if using those might make your life easier.

Moving into the Building Phase

Charlie--thanks for that. I've been mulling Bosley's gear over too, but everything on the Hayate is a bit different but maybe the spinner. Might be able to massage the cowling by adding the characteristic carb scoop, but the canopy is pretty far.

Now that the cut files are done and plan drawing is roughed out, I'm happily headed out to the shop. Seems like a long time! First on the hit list is to get the forms made for the laminations. These were cut from 1" styrofoam on a scroll saw with fine blade. The styrofoam is a little soft but its easy to work with and once its faced with thick packing tape its rigid enough to do the trick.

Have fun,

Paul

Dale--nice! I just looked at an Alfa kit that my buddy is in the middle of building and it looks like a nice construction. Just a little bigger than this one.

The paint scheme on your plastic model is exactly where I'm headed. Was that modeled from a particular aircraft?

Thanks!

Paul

Paul, that was a long time ago, but I believe the decals supplied in the kit were of a specific aircraft.
