Cartoon C-130 Fat Albert

NEAT fast approaches ,and I have one more plane I wanted to finish, a cartono C-130 to go with my Blue Angels formation flyer.

They will be of approximately the same scale, which makes the C-130 have wingspan of 30 inches. I'm going to try vacuum forming the fuselage.

I did a test cut tonight using the profiles I came up with. Glides like a champ!

A PSA to anybody that makes weird planes. I always make a little chuck glider at the beginning of every build. Its a quick way to make sure that the areas are correct (enough vertical behind the CG for these cartoon planes,) and it lets you dial in CG without dorking your finish painted creation.

Hopefully tomorrow evening I can get the fuse plug shaped.

Got the plug almost finished tonight, just need to make the gear sponsons, and cut the center barrel lengthwise.

I've got a couple old Estes 1/4A rockets!

What do you finish the foam plug with for forming Adam? I have a friend who likes Tower Coat film for fiber glassing but I don't know if it would work for thermoforming or not?

IF... one Heat shrinks a plastic bottle onto a plug , Surface iregularity/finish issues are minor worries.
Foam is sketchy as a plug however. Given the 250~300degree Oven heat required ..And the surprising compressive force from the shrinking plastic.
It will work.. only Once... though.
However..Use wood (not Balsa) and one can mass produce heat shrunk parts.
Find the lightest thinnest bottle possible, ie the Very small Water bottles would be a decent choice

This is a pretty high density/high temp machining foam ( I think similar to rohacell). I've pulled polycarb over it in the past for some nose coned and it didn't need any additional treatment. I form the depron at a much lower temp. So hopefully I can pull a fee sets of parts off these plugs.

Not 100% sure, but I believe it's RenShape 5018. It's a polyurethane foam.

FYI only sand or shape PU foam. Don't hot wire it, the degradation products from PU foam are particularly nasty.

Don't care What foam provenence :-)
I've tried Jelutong wood (favoured d by architectural model makers) .. a wee Plastic Water bottle Compressed hard enough to turn the square wood block into a fair semblance of an Orange... no joke, It squeezes Hard.
Even Pine loses it's sharp edges under that pressure.
Fir does not :-)

Vacuum forming was a success, plug held up nicely. Nose was the hardest to form, I porbably should have made the plug about an inch shorter.
