Question
Micro connector types?

Part of my hobby is building electronic circuits, such as strobe lights, for my models. I make my own PC boards, originally using conventional through-hole components, but now getting into surface mounted devices.

My circuits require a three-pin external connection for programming the PICAXE device, and up until now I've been using a simple 3-pin header strip. But I'm looking for something more compact, so am thinking of something like a micro USB connector.

My question is, I know there are other micro connectors out there, but I don't know their names so I can't find them in my usual suppliers' web sites. Any suggestions please? I prefer through-hole because of their better anchorage, but surface mount would be okay I suppose because they won't be used often.

JST have a huge range of connectors and it is very easy to get the wrong type so be warned.

Guess how I know?

Well I've got some 3-pin JST SH right-angle sockets and matching connector pins and housings on the way, so we'll see how they look. From the spec sheet the socket is certainly much smaller than the regular 1/10" header pins I'm currently using.

Just done a test installation of a JST SH socket on a board, and it's just what I was looking for. Just got to widen the two side pads a bit more than the manufacturer suggests, to make soldering a bit easier. The 0.6mm pads for the three pins were not a problem.

Thanks Mephi.
