Speed 400 Q-tee

Hello, I'm converting an old Cox/Airtronics Q-Tee kit to Speed 400 power. Yes I know as some of you may say Dream Catcher hobbies is making it with a 280. but I talked to Roy Simpson and he said it's totally different and 12oz. lighter than the original. So he suggested going with a speed 400. Here's my question. Down thrust in an electric, the 1/2 A version had tons of it. Should I even worry about builing any in to my motor mounting system? Question number 2 my bet is the plane will be around 18-20 oz. all built. I have a Geared speed 400, which I can run 2:1, 2.5:1 or 3:1. I was gonna go 2:1 and about an 8X6 prop. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Greg

I'm not familiar with your particular Q-Tee, but I have seen the info on the SR Cutie.

If they are about the same size and weight, they should be able to use the same power system.

Of course, the Cutie uses the X-250's s400 geared power system.

Prop Graupner Slim 9x5, fixed
Motor Graupner Speed 400, 7.2V
Gear Ratio 2.33:1
Speed Control Jeti 350
Cell SR 500 Max Series
Cell Count 10

I've done what you are contemplating...repower an original Q Tee with a geared 400.
Mine flew quite OK (well, it circled to altitude and floated down when out of Fuel, fun for a novice at least)
originally with it's Back widow. With a mini oly (2.3) 6v, 8 600ae's and 8x6, no wheels, at 21oz the battery powered one barely flew, level flight was a stuggle..not what I expected, remembered, or what others claimed. My younger son called it 'Lame'. after too many failed launches (a couple bungeed) stalls and subsequent repairs, we gave up... it will get a Black Widow for it's next flight!
Different notors, packs ,alternate props were tried with only slight improvement.
In disgust I foam cut a s400 size BEE .. assembled it in an afternoon using the same equipment.. it flew beautifully and proved indestructible enough so the son self taught himself to fly in a week.. the original purpose of the Q-Tee.
I heard that someone was silly enough to 're-issue' the kit.. never heard the 12oz lighter claim... Hard to believe that one!
It could be a couple or maybe even 3 oz lighter if completely built out of 1/8" sticks... But as before the parasol wing mounting is 'silly fragile' and a shoulder mount a'la S-Tee would be a worthwhile improvement.
