Ten Commandments For Dog Owners
by Stan Rawlinson

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you!
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice and when it's speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch it" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you.

Millertime, thanks for that. I clipped it and sent it home.

#10 is a when you have to make one last trip to the vet after 17 years.

Mica the kitteh did not return home on August 3rd. Spent all of the end of last week looking for him. On the evening of the 8th, young Nicholas was out all night for the first time since Mica went missing. I set Mica's cat cozy out on the deck that evening.
Woke up in the morning to see Mica and Nicholas both setting on the deck.
Did Mica get bored and come home? Did Nicholas find him and guided him back? Did he smell his cat cozy?
Right now he is very very angry for not being allowed to go out side. I think I am going to keep him inside until after Burnaby so that I do not have to worry about him while I am gone.

When we lived more or less in the woods back in CT we had a big, all white, fixed tomcat who, being biased, I will say was probably the best, funniest, most lovable cat who ever lived. I'd been hearing a Great Horned owl in a giant pine tree down in the meadow for a week or so. On a clear full moon night my white cat went out and never came back. I never heard the owl again. Very sad.

Thanks for posting that Millertime, it got me a little choked up. My little buddy is going on 12years old and I can hardly stand thinking about the end, but I know its comming. I swear this dog knows everything Im saying. When we got Millie my daughter was 9, now my daughter is 21 and has her own daugher. Time flies, we are within the boundaries of Commandment #1.(10-15yrs)

Sorry to hear your story 420...
My last cat lived 21.5 years, never went out in her life but to go to the vet.
My current cat ( project manager ) does not go out either - too many bad guys out at night.

my outdoor cat that has his own kennel/condo gets very upset around dark and herds us so he can be locked up and safe for the night.. must of had some bad times during his feral youth and knows that a safe place to sleep is a good thing...our other rehabbed feral tammi cat that lives in our house runs the other direction from an open door..

Good friends

tghsmith, I remember your story of that night time shelter, showed it to my wife ... we also thought that something must have happened to bring that kind of behaviour ...
Great to see people taking such good care of their good friends ...

That last trip to the vet is a tough one, and you should be there with your furry friend, both for his/her sake, and yours---.

+1... I can't believe that my dog is already 9... . I don't want to think of the end..... He is the best dog ever, and there will never be another dog in the world like him.

I have had this on our bedrrom dressor for over 35 years:

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true,
to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
