F5b setup

Hi all,

Firstly thanks to all for the much need info for an f5b newbie. Excellent forum.

I'm just building my first f5b machine and have sourced a tacon 3650 and kpg25 5:1 box for my hawk but I'm struggling to get an esc. Do HK still stock the hk200a esc? Been looking for a while but haven't seen any so I've ordered a red brick 200a instead. Will this do the job or should I be on the look out for something else?

Thanks

Out of the box the redbrick will probably hold 200A for short bursts up to 5s. And use max. about 1500mAh per flight. Make sure you have cooling holes in the fuselage and take at least 30min. between the flights. I don't know how much amps your motor can handle?

The REdbrick/HK200 seems to hold-up at 250-260A.
Startup in standard form can be a little rough, but should be manageable at 3-4S. As long es speeds are not extremely high the brake works ok too.
Ideally flash the controller with George's F5B firmware, which is perfect for hotliner application of the Redbrick/HK200.

Not too forget: programming should be done at 2-3S, a higher celcount may overheat the controller during programming, strange but true.

thanks for the info, any particular firmware version? I see there are various types with slower/faster ramp etc. Assume I'm better off with a switch than throttle control? (which scares the **** out of me by the way!) Probably going to work my way up from 3s to 5s as my confidence grows

At sub 3kw levels the short-ramp seems to work best.
At switch is most used. Don't worry about it, full throttle and a decent toss and you're up and away.

Hi Beatfreak, Looks like you aren't too far from a number of the F5B flyers in the UK. Luton, Oxford, Cambs. We may even be having a practice event this weekend (weather permitting) near Huntingdon if you are interested in dropping by to have a chat about setup of the plane.
Drop us a PM if you are

Hi Beatfreak
You are only a few miles away from me, so if you want to get together for those initial flights, and help with the launches that should be easy for us to arrange.

I have sent you a pm with my contact details.

You can solder the caps to those two solder-blobs on the top edges of the circuit board, next to the two capacitors (visible in the righthand pic). Be sure to get some good low-esr caps (Rubycon ZL/ZLH/ZLK of Panasonic FM), about 330-500uF, 25V.
Probably need at least a 60W soldering iron.

Maybe Dick can help you out?
