YOBBO Build Off - LAST DAY!!!! 23 Models Completed!

With the SOS Build Off winding down through it's last few days, after consultation it seems there is a measure of support for another one starting on 1st October 2015 and running until 31st March 2016.

This one is a bit different; no specified age limit on the design, the sole requirement is that the plan was published or the kit released in the year the entrant was born - hence YOBBO - Year Of Birth Build Off. And don't blame me for the name.it was Colonel Blink's idea!

As before, models can be scaled up or down, powered as originally or by any alternate method and flown as originally (e.g. F/F, C/L, Radio) or by any other means (FF to radio, C/L to radio, radio to F/F etc).

Researching a suitable model that appeals is part of the fun, a good place to start is by going to Outerzone and entering the year - 1949 or whatever - into the search box. You might be surprised how many designs come up. Of course there will be many more, it's just a matter of looking.

So, get on with it, as always a build log is not mandatory but is very much to be preferred, it can be on this forum or if desired anywhere else in RCGroups (e.g. if it is a scale model), but you MUST notify me of the entry here (and a link to the build log if elsewhere), in this thread, or I may not pick it up. It would also help if the heading on your first post in the build log was in the format "(model name) for YOBBO Build Off"

No problem

1925 - the year my father was born. Don't feel quite so ancient now.

Nice one Ray, no reason why that one wouldn't work.

1943 Cyklon

This one is going to be very interesting, George. Thanks for doing it.

Here's my entry, a 1943 Czechoslovakian design by Ladislav Neubert, called the Cyklon. A cute and somewhat different design that looks like it should fly well. It's going to need a complete redesign, because the original was intended to be built entirely from hardwood (balsa being unavailable for modeling use at the time).

My version will be RC and electric, enlarged by 50% to give a wingspan of 82".

1973 RCM Buzzard Bombshell

My entry is going to be the Buzzard Bombshell which was published as a R.C. model in the February 1973, RCM Magazine.

I am going to keep the model the same size as the magazine and use an I.C. engine in it, which I have yet to decide on.

It is the only old timer that I can find in my birth year, all the others I found are either scale or pattern looking and since this is an old timer forum I thought why not and I have always wanted to have a Bombshell.

Here is the link to the plan on outer zone: http://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=6500

Once I have started the build I will make a build log.

Lionel.

Outerzone search hint: instead of entering my year in the "simple search" box, I discovered that I could use the advanced search, entering my year in both of the appropriate search boxes, to wit:

and year >= 1966 AND year <= 1966

The simple search generated 34 plans, while the advanced search by year generated 87, quite the significant difference, at least in my experience.

1966 Mayfly

I should like to join this endeavor with a relatively simple model, the Mayfly, published September, 1966 in Model Airplane News. Turns out there is a bit of a story that acompanies the Mayfly, only part of which is known to me, and it is the story that got my attention and which I look forward to sharing and perhaps more fully flushing out as we go along.

The Outerzone link:

http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=6231

There are two versions shown on the plans. I will start with the single channel, rudder-only, .049 powered version and perhaps build the .09 multi as well. Build thread to be placed on this forum at the appropriate time.

And I do wish to express my appreciation to each of the gentlemen who proposed, named, and are administering this build off.

Pulserudder,

You may already have it but if not I can send you a scan of the September 1966 MAN Mayfly article. PM me your email if interested.

Thanks, Ray. I do have the magazine back issue but not a good scanner, so I would welcome an electronic copy of the article that I can include on my build log. I have some other resources related to this model that I will be sharing as we go along.

I gather you must have built up a rather substantial library.....

Regards,

David

Life was so much easier with only 63 choices.

I remember the Mayfly. I have the MAN issue on my bookshelf for reference for a 'someday' build. That model was available as a kit or ARF , and I think Bill Schroeder (sic) did a review on the ARF version.
