Aerobeez new 55" Edge hybrid balsa/EPP - Build Thread

Brand new hybrid balsa/EPP 55 inch Edge 540 from Aerobeez. Dimensions are 55 inch wingspan and 54 inches long minus spinner. This plane is very light for it's size, if you are thinking of using a power system from say a typical Extreme Flight 60", it would be way overpowered and probably come out too heavy. The plane is designed for a motor of about 200g and 1000 watts. I'm using the Hengli S42-50 500kv on 6S 2700 http://usa.wattaplane.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=169 with a 14x7 Xoar, has plenty of power for punchouts from hovers. In addition to the Hengli motor I'm using a ZTW Mantis 65A controller and Hitec HS-225 servos.

This is a very fun plane to fly, it's lightness and floatiness make it great for 3D, don't expect a precise plane though, this is a straight leading edge, Edge 540 designed purely for 3D. Makes a great 3D trainer. Flies very similar to a balsa 60". The fuselage is huge which gives it a very large presence in the air.

After 15 flights my recommended throws and CG:

CG is 105 to 110mm from the LE at the root.
High rates...
35 degrees ailerons
50 degrees elevator
Rudder as much as possible
Low rates...
15 degree ailerons
13 degrees elevator
35 degrees rudder

The plane comes in two great looking color schemes:
http://aerobeez.com/55-EDGE-540-EPP-...ne-Yellow.html
http://aerobeez.com/55-EDGE-540-EPP-...Plane-Red.html

I choose the yellow/black

Nicely packed in a surprisingly small box, the motor box comes unattached, saves space. Fit and finish is impeccable, I've built over a dozen balsa ARF's and this is easily among the best I've ever seen. The quality of the balsa is as good as anything I've from 3DHS or EF.

Can you get away with heavier batteries - say 3300s (550-600g)? Looking to replace my crashed 48" Extra 330 and I have electronics from an old Fliton Edge 540 Freestyle.

I have some 3300's but have yet to try them, I'm thinking it will balance and fly, but I would not think it would fly 3D very well.

Great looking plane Bloosee!
I've been flying the skywing 48" edges for a couple years now and love em. I was thinking about trying the skywing 55" edge, but now I see this.... Decisions... Really like the schemes aerobeez are putting out.
I'm pretty sure no balsa is used in these planes. Just lite-ply.

I'm fairly certain these Aerobeez 55 Edge's are the same as Skywing 55 Edges, other than the paint scheme of course, and that's what the Aerobeez have over the Skywing is the beautiful paint scheme's. Factoring in the cost of shipping they are pretty close in price to the Skywing's from the US distributor.

I've been flying Aerobeez 48 hybrid Extra since September and I can say these 55's fly better.

And yes light ply is what the wood is, generically wood planes are just referred to as "balsa".

And don't forget the differences, one is an Extra and the other is an Edge. Plus size (as you always say).

I put a link to the motor in post #1. It's a very inexpensive motor considering the size. If you want to run 4S 4000 then you'll need to look at other options.

That is true, in fact I'd say the 48 Extra is definitely more precise than the 55 Edge. The 55 is much better at 3D though.
