I took this clip when we were walking the Tongariro Crossing in NZ recently. The lake, high on a volcanic complex, is in a depression and behind a ridge, so it’s a sort of backside zone. The wind was 40 - 50 mph at times. The clip shows the powerful wind rotors whipping up the surface of the water, and although video doesn’t capture the power as much as seeing it first hand, it gives an idea of the massive cyclonic swirls that are happening in messed up backside rotors … no wonder heavy DS ships get sucked down.

Cool Andrew. I've seen similar things at the back of Mt Hotham, way behind the DS zone. It will be really calm on the backside, but then you look down wind and see the huge hundred foot gums nearly getting ripped out of the ground! I reckon I lost my best heavy scorcher from accidentally flying too far back while trying to backside land. It just got slammed!
Cheers mate

LA visit

I'm in/around Anaheim through Wednesday and was wondering if any flying may be going on this week. I don't mind driving a long ways from Anaheim.

Thanks! From a curious hand launch pilot

Got this to play with in 2016 and it has no wings.
This1942 BSA WM20 has been sitting for 22 years and has not been restored, all the lights and horn work not bad for a 74 year old Bike.

If you're a weather junkie like me you'll enjoy this.
BTW, the latest DS record day was Dec 22. Check it out.

Horrible life changing injuries, no empathy from the FPV community, and then the horrendous article linked in the end. Read it through and the article linked at the end, and feel better about your own life!

Where do you get that there was no empathy from the FPV community?
Re-read what he said along with the timestamps on the posts.
He started the thread on July 18th (a saturday), posted 6 more times the same
day, thread was quiet on Sunday (as they often are), and on July 20th (Monday), he posted
"We no longer need help as long as i come up with the radio my cousin will cover
the vehicle and the rest of my family will help with fpv we hope to have it all by Christmas "
The thread ended there, until the followup a couple days ago.
