There has to be some sort of "in-band" signaling between the pack and the charge circuitry . . . and the balance circuitry is built into the pack?
And that's why it's not a standard 2S LiPo. There's actually circuitry inside.

A voltage of 4.8v can represent a pack that is "mostly charged". If you perform a 10 hour charge on a partially depleted pack, you WILL overcharge it.

On this we can agree. But, if you want to do a 10hour charge, the battery should be depleted.

That is true (the DX7s manual even warns against unattended charging). Andy is wrong to be advocating overnight charging for partially depleted packs. Remember, Andy is a software guy.

It is quite unfortunate when an "authoritative source" insists on providing inaccurate information.

Giving it further thought, having the balance circuit in the pack wouldn't necessarily mean that the battery had to "talk" to the charger through any other mechanism than voltage level.

Too bad the hardware guys didn't tap into the charge circuitry for the voltage display. But then again, that circuit probably disconnects once the battery is charged and only reconnects once the wall-wart is plugged in.
