HobbyKing 64mm 10 Blade 3300Kv Alloy EDF Unit

I couldn't find a thread on this 10 blade 64mm EDF from HobbyKing. Does anyone have one yet? I have one on order.

I see the radiused lip is removable. I wonder if they offer a strait version for ducting, or is the shroud long enough after removing the radiused item.

Seems like it might barely cover. I'll post a pic when mine arrives. (Still in China, but has been "sorted" by USPS, whatever that means.)

Seems like that's gonna be some Roasty Toasty 1000 watt motor... inside that streamlined containment oven. Dubious engineer(?) in there somewhere

Found a demo video. I think the 10 blade shown is this unit. Looks similar anyway.

It's long enough. The lip is held screwed on by clear tape. Cutting the tape and unscrewing the lip off is all that is required.

My EDF finally arrived (25 days to U.S.). Looks to be in good shape.

Weighs 230 grams (6 under spec).

Radiused lip is not removable, it is part of the entire shroud.

Sticker on unit says "KV:3000", specs say 3300KV. Hmm.

Will try to test this weekend. My ESC requires larger bullet connectors so I will have to change those first.

I have had many examples of wrong Kv on some brands of Chi-Com motors. I have had to start at the lower cell count range, and see what readings I would get. The add cell(s). Even their amp restrictions/limits are not very accurate. So I prefer to just spend a few more bucks and get the proven brands. Assemble my own fan.

Shame the lip is not removable. Makes for a good "foamie" jet replacement fan tho.

Yeah I'm planning to put this in a T-45 foamie.

Just ran a quick test on 3S (40C) and got 670g of thrust at 40 amps. Seems a bit low, but battery has been sitting for a few weeks. Voltage was 12.3V afterwards. Should be able to try 4S tomorrow.

On the plus side the 10 blade "woosh" sound is great.

Does the fan seem to be well balanced?

That Kv is higher than 3000, to load 40A, on 3s and only a 64mm fan. Cutting down the original CS-10 rotor should significantly lessen the higher load qualities of the design. It has always been my thoughts, that when a "un-common" designed rotor is cut down, it loses it's efficiency, over the original diameter.

In the case of this rotor, the high pitch is lessened, as diam is increased. Cutting it back, utilizes that part of the rotor that is at a higher pitch than the stock tips. I think that explains the nice wooshing sound. Efficiency will most likely go down as power is increased.

But...I like scale, over un-realistic speeds. So, quality sound has always been more important to me. I find higher pleasure in seeing and hearing a more realistic model in flight.

Has anyone confirmed the thrust numbers for this setup?

I got way less than 3lbs on 4s with slightly more KV and higher volts

regards

At full power, yes. However it has a slight buzzy sound at certain mid-throttle settings. Not sure if this is EDF timing, bearings, or balance issue? I'm about to post a video of a test run, you can hear it as throttle is reduced at the end of the run.

Agreed. I wasn't all that interested in EDFs until I heard the whooshy ones.
