Frog Firefly

This one just arrived in this week, as 16 x A4 scans which I had to stitch together carefully, so there may well be errors hidden in the wing rib spacing etc... Frog Firefly sports biplane. 36in wingspan. Sadly there is no printwood with it, no instructions. But a beautiful plan, I do think. The kit originally came with a moulded balsa fuselage in two parts, so it's going to be a challenge to try and build this from just the plan. Lots of formers and planking, I guess.

Don't suppose anyone out there has printwood for this? Or a photo of a completed model?

You are so right Steve, a lovely plan - I have an original - well, a photocopy - but as you say no wood patterns. I never built the Firefly but I did build a Fox which had the same moulded balsa fuselage, this was lovely but the inadequate wing mounting pylon let the model down. This one would certainly be a challenging build, looking at the fuselage lines, I think that it would be possible to reproduce the moulded shell structure if you went to the trouble of making a mandrel, two layers of soaking wet 1/16" balsa and yards of elastic bandage would do the trick then, removed when dry and glued up back on the mandrel with a layer of tissue in between. The finished model would be such an attractive shape it would be worth the trouble.

I love FROG models.

If you go to 6.00 minutes into this video, you can see a Firefly in flight and landing.

It's not detailed, but better than nothing, I suppose.

There's usually a few to be seen at Cocklebarrow. A guy called Mike Womersley has a twice-sized one.

Spirit of St. Louis - Karlstrum Drawings

Hi George,

The Karlstrum planviews of the Spirit of St. Louis are just what I've been looking for. I'll be using the Karlstrum planviews as the basis for drawing my own plans for a detailed scale model of this aircraft.

I just found and ordered a vintage copy of the March 1959 Model Airplane News. So hopefully I will soon have source material for scanning and generating some higher resolution PDFs of the Karlstrum drawings suitable for printing at various scales.

George, thanks very much for putting me on to these planviews. If someone else doesn't beat me to it, I'll make higher resolution PDFs of the Karlstrum Spirit of St. Louis drawings available to others with an interest once I've completed the work.

RWD-5 plans read-only

Still can't save this drawing to my thumb drive. There is no check box on my 'properties' for the file that allows me to suppress a read-only characteristic. I click on save as/pdf, pick the drive, and get the read-only message. When I go into the properties, no check box. I suspect that the person who can manipulate the read-only option is the document's owner, not someone copying it. Other ideas will be welcomed.

Thanks, folks.

It saves fine for me. Try saving it to HD. Maybe re-format your TD?

Bu-131 Jungmann and others

Hello Again
Today I have for you two projects: first is model done by Wieslaw Schier which represents german training plane from 1935 Bu-131 Jungmann. Funny part about it is that in 1950s everything german was straight to the point forbidden. From that reason this nice plane had to be presented as C-104. I'm attaching original drawings from 1955 and available now original manufacturing drawings of real plane from 1935.

Model scale 1:10
Model length 670mm
Wing span 740mm
Designer: Wieslaw Schier
Published 1955

As others I'm adding drawings of lovely A2 class sailplane from 1954 called OM-42 designed by Mieczyslaw Opalinski

PS: tomorow I will scan DKD1 drawings I found in my archive

They do fly pretty well ... to be fair, that video clip does not do it justice.

How could they fail to fly well? ... lots of wing, lots of tailplane. What's not to like?

I hope to be forgiven that plans are not ancient.
