Trident, You are correct. the longer shaft is better but since you are a total newbie, don't worry about that or the brushless option for now.
I strongly recommend getting some 400 size training gear as well as a R/C simulator for practice.
As far as flight times, you need to time your flights because when the battery hits LVC (low voltage cutoff) it doesn't glide. It drops
The heli is easy to work on. Just follow the dirctions and take your time.
