Help!
PPM Signal from PC to Transmitter Module

Hello there,

what i aim for:
-500m - 1km range.
-Send PPM Signal from PC to Transmitter Module to Quadcopter receiver

product thoughts:
-http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__90770__OrangeRX_DSMX_DSM2_Compatible_2_4Ghz_Tran smitter_Module_V1_2_JR_Turnigy_Taranis_compatible_ .html
-https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9718

approach toughts:
-connect USB to FTDI Adapter
-connect FTDI Adapter to PPM IN PIN on Transmitter Module
-Use FTDI Driver to send serial data in form of PPM

question:
-is there any "open source" ppm receiver? I guess if i would like to use my Turniny 9x Transmitter module/receiver pair i would have to know their encoding for the ppm signal, right?

Any help appreciated

PPM isnt RS232 serial !

Maybe RS232 serial from the PC to a dedicated serial-in/ppm-out board.
Have a look at the FMS flight sim dongles on ebay. They convert USB to ppm and appear as a virtual serial port to the PC. Otherwise homebrew a serial-in/ppm-out arduino, easy enough.

Then you'll need to write your PC app which generates the serial commands.
I'd suggest some further study as this isnt a trivial task if you're going DIY.

Cheers
Phil

Hello phil_g,

thanks for your answer.
Do you know a good serial-in/ppm-out board? http://www.ebay.de/itm/12in1-RC-Flug...YAAOxyUrZS53fj is that what you mean? But isnt that PPM to USB (or can it be also used for USB to PPM)?

Another question is: Do i have to send the serial data in a specific format/protocol? Doesnt every brand have different protocol?

Also do i have to attach this to the RC-Controller trainer port or do i have to attach this to the RC-Controllers Transmitter Module? (They have serial in pins)
And basically, dont these RC-Transmitter Modules actually act as a kind of serial in/ppm-out converter? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Module_RX.html

Im a little bit confused

Thank you

Arduino can do this if you know how to solder. There's ppm pins and a serial or usb port depending on how you want to interface to ypur computer. You'll need to write some code but it is a simple problem if you know how to use an arduino.

Check flytron cable USB-PPM, it does exactly what you want and has a library to use from almost any programming languages.

Why not use the PC's sound card? That's how we used to do it...

Weak resolution... at 44100 sampling rate will have 44 samples per millisecond.
Thus 44 steps per channel...
