Top Flite Mustang 60 Kit Gas Engine

I have pretty much decided to put a gas engine in the front of my kit I am building. I like the DLE20 but there are two versions. The regular weighs 4-5 ounces less than the one with the exhaust out the rear but I doubt that would fit under the cowl.

YOU'LL WANT THE REAR EXHAUST;
It's a very tight fit in that cowling.

Would it make it really nose heavy?

I was also considering a Saito 125 but I am a little concerned about running a glow engine inverted and all the complications that can occur there.

The DLE 20 with a JTEC muffler will almost fit.

Is that the version with the rear exhaust or a wrap around pitts?

What complications do you anticipate ?

I run all my 4 strokes inverted.

I run all my saito and OS 4-strokes inverted, no problems in 20 years. That's just not an issue when you set it up proper. I have the dle20ra (rear muffler and carb) and really like it. It's pretty loud but sounds real cool when that engine unloads in a screamin divin strafin run over the runway. It's a really high reving engine. My telemtry says I'm getting a little over 10k rpm in a straight and level pass with a 16x8 MA classic prop. Head temp is around 200*F. It's gonna stress that airframe so build it stout and with tight linkage. I gotta say it's the only out of the box engine Ive had that's run great from the git go. Im also real picky about my idle, I hate a plane that runs away from me at idle. I have a good solid idle at 1800, and even down to 1540. But I just don't want to test fate so 1800 it is. It stays put right there. The 20ra is the only engine that will fit as a replacement in my busa cub without any additional hacking on the cowl. Gotta replace a worn out 15 year old saito 1.20.

All my .60 sized warbirds get saito .100, (my engine of choice) it keeps them light for me. I tried a 20cc in H9 Hellcat and broke both stabs with flutter as soon as I went to full throttle. Barely got the plane down with broken stabs and caved in firewall from the cart wheel. A kit built would stand a better chance of holding up. It's gonna be heavy with a 20cc, just the way it's gonna be. You can cut some of that weight using a ibec from Tech-Aero, I have 4 of them and they work great. It gets you down to one battery. You'll need stout retracts.

Would a 16" prop create clearance problems on a 60 sized warbird ?

Well I spoke to my LHS owner and he said that they can be a real pain to start for the first time of the day. I am concerned about having to futs with it and possibly start it inverted for the first time of a flying day.

If properly set up, you won't have those problems.

Yeah, what Tom says! We're on the same page here. I find 4-strokes much easier to set up inverted than 2-strokes. They have a "little" more leeway in tank position. Tank setup for any inverted glow engine is center of tank about 3/8" to 1/2" BELOW the center of the carb spraybar. That's the ideal setup. You have a little more leeway up or down with 4-strokes. Not so much with 2-strokes. I have reached the limit before with a saito 1.80 in a zero. The tank was 1 1/2" too high. I didn't have starting problems, just transition problems and bogging down at half to full throttle. The issue is the amount of head pressure to the carb, there's a balance there. I fixed it by machining a 1.5" carb intake manifold extension. This got the carb spraybar lined up with the tank. Worked perfect.

A properly setup inverted engine setup works no different than any other engine setup. Just follow the guide lines and you'll be fine.

What about the nitro pooling up at the top of the engine? Wouldn't it gum up around the glow plug and not want to start?

Not a problem in a proper setup. Been doing it for 20 years.
