advice desperately needed

My son (9yrs old) has loved flying toy helis for about 3 yrs. Four months ago I bought him a blade cx2 for $180 and it was a piece of crap! It spun wildly (only countered by full opposite rudder) from the moment it first went airborne, and after many attempts, crashes, repairs, and more crashes, we finally gave up on it.

His birthday is coming up and he wants a heli but I have no idea what to get him. He has been flying the nano qx without the stability assist control for the last two months.

I fly airplanes so any advice here is greatly appreciated!

If he is flying a Nano Qx in agility mode, he's ready for a CP heli. I'd start what a MCPx V2, if you can find one.

Yeah I don't see the problem with just working your way through the whole Blade line-up. It's kinda designed for that. Start with one of these and work your way up to the big stuff. The Nano CP is relatively harmless - I seriously doubt it would even break a TV.

thanks for the advice. great video btw. have you flown the nano qx? does the ax3s have a similar assist effect? (it may be a great way to transition as the quadcopter is inherently pretty stable)

tks again for the info.

Yeah that's my video, I was flying it. It is stabilized but not self-leveling, so it's very similar to flying the Nano QX in acro mode.

Both the mCPX V2 and nano CPX would be suitable. However, if you want to keep the repair and running costs down, I would go for the mCPX V2. The nano has the reputation of going through motors quickly and its board is more susceptible to being damaged after recurrent crashes. Moreover, there are cheap compatible aftermarket and clone parts available for the mCPX.

That's a good point - the Nano kinda sits by itself, more novelty than anything else, but it is a good trainer. The mCPX v2 would probably be a good step up - I would avoid the mCPX BL - too much power, hard to control it inside.
