Build Log
Cloud Surfer 60i | Full Fuselage | 60" Wingspan | Dollar Tree Foam Plans

I have just started designing and building a new full fuselage light weight single engine airplane made mainly from Dollar Tree Foam board. I had a lot of requests for plans on my previous scratchbuilt full-fuse plane: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1774879, so this time I will include plans with my build log. The new plane will be a similar layout but will now be about 25% larger and will have a more scale appearance.

Cloud Surfer 60i

Wingspan: 60" (152 cm)
Length: 44" (112 cm)
Height: 11.5" (29 cm)
Weight: 2.0 - 2.5 lbs. (907 g - 1134 g)
Wing Area: 3.375 sqft
Wing Loading: 9.45 - 11.85 oz/sqft

Features:

- Inexpensive to Build
- Scale Flight Characteristics
- 3ch - 5ch
- Optional Flaps
- Optional Rudder
- Low Wing Loading

I have started the build, wings & fuselage are 50% complete. Plans are also being designed as the build goes along. I will post initial pictures later tonight.

Some more progress today. Made the flap hinges and mounted the flaps, still need to make control horns and connect them to the servos.

The hinges were made from foam and bristol board.

Got the flaps working. I used BBQ skewers to stiffen up the flap surface, I then covered the flap with thin pieces of foam (cut from party plates) to continue the contour of the air foil.

Next will be the ailerons which are already cut out and finishing the top of the wings

The flaps extend and retract unnaturally fast right now, what can I use to slow them down? Would some type of resistors work or do I have to buy special modules/servos?

Awesome, thanks. Can I hook this up before the Y connection for the flap servos so that I only need one?

Ailerons are installed and hooked up. I like to make my own control horns from steel or aluminum sheeting, this allows me to customize them for every plane.

Just finished a super bright landing light setup.

4X 1W LED's in a cluster

4W of power! Should be very visible even on a sunny day. Will be mounted behind the prop to keep things cool.

Wings are pretty much complete. Just made & installed the wingtip navigation lights as well as a central breadboard with resistors. The battery used for the photos was a 9V, I built them to run on 3S so they are much brighter on the lipo!

I think I also finished the plans for the wings. This is the first time i'm creating plans so there are alot of changes as I go along and it is in general a pain in the ***. They are made to scale and will be in PDF format, so you will be able to just print them out in "tiles/poster" or you can use the measurements for the large square & rectangular pieces and only print the smaller details & specific shapes.

Here is a preview of the plans:
