Build Log
A-10 Thunderbolt II depron twin Pusher

hi Guys,

I've got a variety of projects on the go at the moment, and I'm not quite ready to start building this one yet, but I have just been laid up in bed with a bad back, so I got busy with my CAD system and put together a set of plans to build a twin pusher A-10, with retracts.

Hopefully in the next few months I'll get to it, but I thought if anyone was feeling brave, they are welcome to give it a go!

I designed it for these Retracts, which are really small and light...

I did a twin tractor depron A-10, it worked well with fixed under carriage that look like they are retraced but extend enough to work like a tail dragger (maybe the pics will make more Sense! ):

Great job on churning out all the plans Craig, I really must learn a CAD package so I can also contribute too.

I've just been looking at your tractor a10 and I think it's very cool. No problems with the plans, i use cad almost every day at work, so I can put a set of plans together very quickly now, of course that doesn't tell me how they are going to fly!

I have also recently just finished plans for a Bae Hawk, but I'm not going to swamp the forum with untested plans, so I'll wait until The viggen is sorted.

Went to RAF Fairford Royal International Air Tattoo, and saw the A-10, and it really made me want to build my A-10 design... Won't be so long now... just got to build a workshop first...

Great. Why do you need a workshop ... first?

Hey Craig
One of my all time favorites!
I always wanted to build a hog and I'm currently in the process to draw up plan version number 10.

As always: Great plans !

Just a thought:
Instead of going 2x6mm with the wings, have you considered the option of using a Kfm2, Kfm3 or even Kfm7 wing ? Especially the first two should give you additional lift. (Just have a gut feeling, you'll end up a tick on the heavy side on weight vs wing area with retracts and all)

Happy building
Cheers
Olli

Hey Olli,

Great to hear from you - What is plan No. 10? show me !

Yeah it will be a bit on the heavy side, but it has a good wingspan, and I wanted this bird to fly like the original, slow and low. I'm planning to sand an aerofoil shape into the wings to get the lift, I could us a KF foil, but for aesthetic purposes only, I would rather go with a more conventional aerofoil shape.

Keep in touch

Craig

Craig

Your wish is my command, though I will show parts of plan no 9.

My version no 1, ended up as a dry build: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1427664

Since then I just refined, changed the approach, changed wing profile, ....
Began to build, but did not pan out for whatever reason: Somehow what looked good in 2D but did not fit in 3D, screw up with the wings, ....

With verision no 9, I realized I will end up too heavy, so now drawing no 10.

My last 2 approaches:
I love building with slots. Though they are a pain to cut properly, building is almost like playing with Lego. (see lego construction guide below) You know exactly where the piece belongs.

Wings will be Kfm 7, so I cannot screw up with asymmetrial wing results.

To get the rounded fuselage top, I plan to cover it with 3mm depron but down to the fuselage bottom. In V9, the fuselage sides have been 6 mm depron, with V10 I will do them also in 3 mm. So I need to widen the fuselage width by 6 mm, adjusting the bulkheads, and so on.

Since I do all the plans in Visio, I just hope I will not forget a piece.
But it will take some time, since I usually tinker with the plan during lunchbreak in the office. (When I have time for a lunchbreak)

Cheers
Olli

Hi Olli,

Sorry it took a while to respond - been away on holiday! Looks very good - I can see you have put a lot of thought into your design.

Where are you at with it? have you flown it yet?

Regards

Craig
