Question
Solid model plan conversion B-18 Bolo

I have been reading over the latest scale contest. Those guys got my creative juices moving!

I've always wanted to build scale, been too busy, until I figured, if I don't start I may never get started.

Mostly a sport builder/flyer.

Skill sets:
Started flying rc and building kits in 1990. One plans built stand off scale Fokker D7.

Knowedge of illustrator, got the concept of vector graphics.

I found the only plan I could find of a B-18 Bolo. It's from a solid wood model website. I've been tracing the plans in Inkscape (can't find my Illustrator disk :/)

My question is, how much larger should I make the tail feathers and wings over scale so it's flyable?

I'm thinking around a 36" ws. I left out the motor info and another details, I don't have that with me at the moment.

All cards on the table, I'm a total rookie at designing, so any suggestions on what I don't know, and any links on design would greatly be appreciated.

There are many DC3/C47 topics. Just go there and get plans. If my eyes are right, only the fuselage is really different on B-18

Y,know.
Your right. I overlayed them and the fuse's are totally different. I need to dig that stuff up. There was a reason I canned this before.
Historically, the original wings and tail feathers were the same, just enlarged.
Thanks

When you have wings and tail fin, You just need to scale bulkheads to build the fuselage...

It looks to me that the tail surfaces are OK for size just as they are shown in the drawing.

Bonus on my way from work!

Bonus on my ride home from work today. I caught N500MF coming in on final. Up-engined to turbo props off loading some of the Lord's workers from Captiva. No mistaking that slow moving silloutte!

One of the few remaining B-18 examples is at the Wings Over The Rockies museum. Go hee and scroll down:

Thanx, the picture icon is there, but the link is broken. I think the AF museum in Dayton has one too.

Drawing...

Learning inkscape...freecad is tough.

I started the C-47/Bolo conversion a while a go...on the second round...I'm eliminating the classic C-47 fuse and going to try and slip in the Bolo fuse.

With shoulder issues from working on a computer all day long...it's hard to sit in front of a lap top too long.

You guys who are drawing and building...especially for a build off...my hat's off to you.

Y'all are an inspiration.

Going back n'forth on this. I was going to scale up a C-47 wing. Looked good in my head, but using Inkscape for the first time, I was a bit overwhelmed. Looking at it again, I should've scaled the motors to match, then the wing/rib width& length, breaking it down in segments. Again, not knowing Inkscape, and being impatient I started drawing it using the original as a template. More learning the tools as I go along.

If anyone is wondering why bother, Pat Lynch said it, these build contests might inspire someone to try their own build

Still with it...

I'm still at it.
Been in physical therapy for the past month with a shoulder injury from using a mouse at work.

I've run out of physical therapy and doctor visits...they said I'd probably have this nagging pain. They gave me my rubber bands for exercises and cut me loose...finally!

I've been tracing over the wooden model plans.

It was easier for me to trace than try and modify the C-47 plans. I'm new to Inkscape, getting use to know the tools has been fun too.

Almost copied

So far, with my arm soreness down to a 5...been able to trace this so far.

Now, I need to study some structures to create the skeleton.

I don't know how some of you guys build 2 or 3 in a few months!

Still, I enjoy this.

Thanx, got hung up on structures, being new to foam, and so many choices on building kind off overwhemed me. I saw a thread where Demon Driver is building a Airbus 319... the short fused one. He's over in the transport dept threads. That was something this ol' balsa builder could wrap his brain around.
Any suggestions are welcome.
thanks for the prompt.
