Question
Outboard Pass Transistor

I need to increase the current output of an LM338T Voltage regulator. I've found some circuits that suggest an "outboard pass transistor", and they look like they will do the job, but they don't list an actual part number for the transistor, just the schematic symbol that shows a PNP transistor.

My question is this, I have some NPD6020P transistors availible, would they work OK in this application? They are logic-level MOSFETs, here's the data sheet , but I don't know enough theory to know if they would be suitable. Or would I be better off with something else?

Thanks for any help, guys!

Nope, FET doesn't work, it needs to be bipolar. Just about any power PNP will do.

try a MJ 4502 ... or TIP 36 or BD 250

that should do it ...

or also use 2 or 3 338 in // ( see 338 or 350 datasheet for the balancing circuit )
