F6F Hellcat Emergency Landing

The aluminum motor mount cracked and failed while entering a high speed low pass down the runway. The motor leads wound up and pulled violently on the speed control and battery, popping the canopy, pushing the cowl out, and ultimately scaring the piss out of me!

F6F Hellcat emergency landing (1 min 43 sec)

In the end all I need to get back to normal is a prop, motor mount, and clean underwear.

Nice emergency landing!

Wow! Hope your hands have stopped shaking now! On a positive note; you were very lucky it happend in the best possible spot in the sky. If it happened anywhere else, you may have been going swimming! Nice one!

Thx guys. It is a Dynam airframe and motor. Other elecs/servos are aftermarket and I repainted/decals to resemble the MINZI III.

Actually the landing was not the hard part once I realized that's what I needed to do. The hard part was trying to think straight with a couple seconds to choose my fate while my eyes could hardly believe what they were seeing. It was coming down no matter what I did but the consideration was, "can I get the gear down fast enough to get them effectively on the runway, or while calculating if she will glide far enough do I go for the grass on her belly?" I was really just lucky I had a choice and even more so that it worked out ok.

You're right about that. Dead stick recovery is all about elevation and I had none. LOL

I think everyone in the club has pulled a plane (or wreckage) from the lake. It's kinda like a right of passage. Some pilots refuse to fly here because they are intimidated by the lake so close to the runway.

Our club has a nice boat for water retrieval. Its amazing how many foam planes the lake has actually saved. It seems to be much more kind many times than the alternatives. It really is a beautiful place to fly though and great for float planes!

Heck of piloting skills and video skills also. Nice save!

See you had a 3 blade on it, and it was missing one. Also saw a lot of bugs in the area. Impact with one maybe was the cause? FOD to the prop, broke a blade, and that was all she wrote?

Thx! Very kind words. Actually the motor mount let go and the prop broke against the cowl when it initially came loose. Bugs are an issue this time of year that's for sure!

Here's the freeze frame...

Yeah you were very lucky, but I give credit where credit is due. That was some quick thinking, quick reflexes and nerves of steel. Maybe we should call you Captain 'Sully' Sullenberger!

Thx but that would be an insult to Cap'n Sully LMAO!

I bet he never buys his own drinks at the bar. He would be a great person to chat with.

Agreed! I am surprised that the change in CG did not render the plane unflyable. You did an excellent job in bringing her in!
