I feel your pain. I find that dark under wing and wide contrasting stripes work well. When I was a newbie I used to add them to one wing only so I knew from a distance whether the model was moving away or coming towards me.
Here's a few suggestions for you. Aimed at glider guiders but what works well at a distance will hole true at closer range. Interesting at how certain colours are perceived as shades of grey (but not 50) at a when further away
Another trick is to add some reflective silver tape to the wing tips and top of fin as these will glint in the sun.
