wedgie upgrade

I'd like to get longer flight times on the wedgie. It seems fast enough with the speed 400 but if I put a Hacker 20 series brushless on it wont I get longer duration as well as saving a few ounces? How about the Astro 020? comments please

Thanks,
Tom

Longer Flight times

Try a stock speed 400 and go with 1050 Nim 8 cells sub A. Flight times are about 15-20 min. at full speed.

You statement is generally correct. Brushless motors are generally lighter and more efficient, which leads to long flight times. I don't know about the particular motor. Talk to Sean at www.aero-model.com.

Don't know if these are the ones that Merrill wrote about, but Diversity has 1000 mah NiMHs that are the same size as 600AE's. I've been using them as rx batteries in my sailplanes. They're good for up to 10 amps, so they ought work well for Speed 400 apps.

Batterys

I am working on getting some new batterys in to do some testing. I have some friends helping with them. I need to get the data together so stay tuned for the info.

Speed 400 draws 15A at full power.

15 amps is only static though, on a slightly over-propped condition, like I use. 10 amps, in flight (or less), is pretty typical if you take run time & flight time, then calculate the amp draw from batt capacity. With very little throttle mgt, I think it would work well, but it would be nice if Steve Neu or somebody else in the battery "know" ran some controlled tests on some of these smaller, newer Nimh's.

Dr. E,

I make it 96mph pitch speed at about 20500 rpm - for just over a minute - at full throttle ! ! !

Rocket400 motor, of which I have more than a few - for use with MFA gearboxes . . . these eat amps on direct drive - 15 Amps at almost 18,000 rpm with nearly two minutes ( at full throttle ) is about the same as the Aveox that you quoted, on 7 X 500AR's
Pitch speed in this case would be about 67mph.
7 X 600AE's fair little better with 'The Rocket'.

I'm going to make a new 30" wing for My Hacker B20-26L - able to use all my 7- and 8- cell packs of AE, and AR nicads !
Will be very fast, with 4+ minutes at full throttle.

My Motor is 14,700 rpm at 6 Amps with 7 X 500AR's - that's nearly 5 minutes at full throttle - with a more realistic 56mph pitch speed !
With 7 X 600AE's - almost the same performance - for nearly 6 minutes at full power !
With 8-cell packs . . .

Application of throttle in a dive might even slow it down !

I think I might have made a good choice with the Hacker; as always, time will tell !

Then there's the small copy of a German Nurflugel I'm planning on doing as well. . .
Where is that HWC ?
